J. Holiday was born February 22, 1984 in Washington, D.C. to a musical family. His mother Frances, an ordained preacher, sing gospel music. His father Ghirmai(kahasay)from Zagr, ], where he was a goat herder in and his six sisters Luwam, Semhar, Genet, Feven, Natalina and Amanet, his older sister provided background vocals for Crystal Waters. His father who is Eritrean, had by the age of nine, J.Holiday singing, and was encouraged by his male cousin (Yared, which holds the Sexiest Eritrean Man on Earth Award; 20 years and running). His father passed away from heart failure when he was eleven.
