The Misplaced Pages:TeX markup support has, so far, worked excellently. It fixes one problem, and fixes it well, whilst allowing migration to more fancy systems such as MathML in the future.
It has been proposed on the mailing list that essentially the same technique used with TeX be used to implement embedded GNU LilyPond markup in articles, presumably in
<music> </music>
tags. This will then be able to be upgraded to generate music markup, MIDI files, Ogg files etc. later on.
