The former Serbia and Montenegro, while existed, controlled one of the major land routes from Western Europe to Turkey and the Near East. In addidion, it was strategically well-located along the Adriatic coast. The country split up to a separate Serbia and Montenegro in 2006; for additional information, see the articles about their geographies.
