Thank you

Thank you for your recent report at the administrators' noticeboard about a vandal user. You did an excellent job reverting the vandalism and restoring the integrity of the articles. If you encounter a similar situation again, you should do a couple of things differently.

Instead of warning a user "by hand", as you did, you should provide a formal [[WP:WARN|user warning template such as {{subst:uw-vandalism1}}, which gives you the following message:

Welcome to Misplaced Pages. Although we invite everyone to contribute constructively to our encyclopedia, at least one of your recent edit, such as the one you made to Liverpool, New South Wales, was not constructive and has been reverted or removed. Please use the sandbox for any test edits you would like to make, and take a look at the welcome page to learn more about contributing to this encyclopedia. Thank you.

If the user does not stop, you can escalate to uw-vandalism2, 3, and 4, and after that you should file a report at Misplaced Pages:Administrator intervention against vandalism to block the user. Sometimes you can start the warnings at a number higher than 1 if the vandalism is already severe for multiple edits. In rare cases it is appropriate to block vandals without any warning at all. The general advice is to use your judgment, don't bite the newcomers, and ask the administrators if you need any help (just like you did this time, though I'm actually not an administrator). Let me know if you have any questions. Shalom 06:51, 29 June 2007 (UTC)

Twinkle

Hello. If you upload Mozilla Firefox and then install Misplaced Pages:WikiProject User scripts/Scripts/Twinkle you won't have to copy and paste warnings into vandals talk pages, its automatic. It also has many other benefits. Also check out the pics in this article - Malabar Battery. Cheers_Ad@m.J.W.C. (talk) 09:02, 13 December 2007 (UTC)

Thanks for that. I plan on finding more places like Malabar Battery. I know there is one at La Parouse not far from the Malabar one and there are even more at Watsons bay, Vaucluse and the Chullora Railyards that need looking into. The one at Chullora might be the most difficult to access and a night in jail if you get caught doing so, or even longer. With the Mozilla FF you can bring up an entire menu of warnings, so after reverting vandalism by an ip or user, you are automatically directed to the offenders talk page, after this you click warn at the top of the screen then select the appropriate warning for the occasion. Based on an edit summary that user made regarding you, I extended his block for continuing to harass you. If he does anything further, I'll just protect his talk page for the duration of the block. Thank you for letting me know (and for taking the high road about it). —C.Fred (talk) 23:00, 21 December 2007 (UTC)

suburbs

yes I have tagged many suburbs mainly history sections. the references do not supply full citation on the complete history as spelt out in the articles. I find this a weakness of many suburb entries in Sydney. as they contain many unverified claims. The book of sydney suburbs is difficult to verify without an online reference. Page numbers are preferred for book citations Michellecrisp (talk) 06:33, 21 December 2007 (UTC)

Thanks for your reply. I think inline citations are preferable as per WP:PROVEIT. Michellecrisp (talk) 13:40, 21 December 2007 (UTC)

Sydney suburbs

I see michelle Crisp has been adding tags about the refs. on Syd. Sub. articles. I can see what she's getting at, although I also appreciate your concerns. When making an addition to an article, I usually try to upgrade the refs., but sometimes can't because there might be a couple of books listed in the refs. and I don't know which passages came from what book. the refs. are often a problem with these articles, namely the lack of footnotes.

One thing I thought of is to add a ref. to Gregory's in the first paragraph about the sub's location, so at least that's one ref with footnote. Also re. national estate, if the sub. has anything on the Register.

Those articles could really do with more footnotes, but having said that, it's been a monumental effort to create all those articles on Syd. subs. I don't think I could have done it.

References

I only delete stuff that is questionable and of course uncited. otherwise I'd tag it. That is the right of anyone that is an editor, of course if it is verifiable then it should stay but it sounded like an invented reason for why it's called Neutral Bay. Michellecrisp (talk) 06:35, 24 January 2008 (UTC)

although I will stand corrected on Neutral Bay. I've found a reference for it. Michellecrisp (talk) 06:37, 24 January 2008 (UTC)

Federation

If you're interested in more Fed. material, I've just started a Fed gallery at commons. I realized I had shots of all 12 styles, so I might as well go for it.Federation Do you remember the sydney architecture.com site I told you about? They've used all my shots of the Abbey and witches houses, without giving me a credit. Might have some of yours too. I emailed them, asking for a credit, but no response yet.

Sydney suburbs

Have just been working on the paddo and Randwick articles. Couldn't help wondering, did you write all of those articles yourself, or even a fair bit of them? You have my unbounded admiration. Couldn't have done it myself. Sardaka (talk) 09:29, 29 January 2008 (UTC)

Sydney Suburbs - Commercial Area

Thankyou J Bar for your comments.

I might note that I have not changed "the headings in a lot of the Sydney suburb articles, particularly Commercial Area to Central Business District.". I only changed the one heading for one suburb.

I disagree with your assessment regarding the use of the phrase Central Business District - which refers to the main (central) place (district) of commercial activity (business) for any place, be it a town, city, village, etc. If there are two "commercial areas" (as ex Sim City users prefer) then the CBD refers to the main one of the two.

I will however leave it as is. :)

Also, who is the "we" in "...That is why we believe that Commercial Area is a more appropriate..." - is it the royal "we" or the "we" of a particular interest group attempting to dominate the language style on Australian wikipedia pages? ;) (This is rhetorical) —Preceding unsigned comment added by OzWoden (talkcontribs) 05:44, 30 January 2008 (UTC)

Camperdown gallery

Hi JBar I note you saw my photos re Camperdown. As I was inserting the WikiTable I realised that it would not be in 'proportion' with the other galleries on the page. I personally prefer WikiTable because, as you may have noticed, it is possible to put in a strip of piccies that has photos big enough for casual browsers to see a reasonable sized photo without necessarily having to click on a little thumbnail to see a larger picture. Often that's all they require. WikiTable doesn't take up much more real estate on the page, if any, than the old style gallery which contains a lot of white space, and as a fairly prolific poster of images of terraces and other old buildings in Australia I tend to use WikiTable as opposed to gallery. What are your thoughts on this? (as an example of a WikiTable version of Gallery see my photos at: http://en.wikipedia.org/Dubbo,_New_South_Wales - Architecture)- Personally I would like to see all galleries upgraded to WikiTable where appropriate. Cheers Michael --MichaelGG (talk) 12:04, 31 January 2008 (UTC)

Thanks for the info J Bar, obviously in the case of Camperdown I should have stayed within the style of the page, just interested in the use of Wiki Tables in general and note Misplaced Pages's space concerns. Also having a good monitor I tend to forget that many people are viewing on smaller or older displays, especially many overseas. Cheers. Michael--MichaelGG (talk) 03:07, 1 February 2008 (UTC)

On Commons

Thanks for that I wasn't trying to deleted anyones work, I was simply trying to organize all the photos in Category Sydney that should be in sub cats and not the main category, even my picturs are being removed by me from this category. I will go through the commons links in the articles and redirect . Cheers_Ad@m.J.W.C. (talk) 01:34, 6 February 2008 (UTC)

I tried to categorize every photo, if I have left some out let me know. I have created quite a lot of new sub cats for the Sydney cat in commons, you may have quite a few photos that could fit in, especially the Hunters Hill, New South Wales pictures and more.
