For the kickboxer of the same name, see David Archuleta (kickboxer).Template:Infobox musical artist 2 David Archuleta (born December 12, 1990 in Miami, Florida) is a singer, and current contestant in the Top 24 on American Idol. Archuleta spent the first six years of his life in various cities in Florida, but later moved to Salt Lake City, Utah, in February 1997, and later to Murray, Utah where he currently resides with his parents and siblings. At the age of 10, Archuleta auditioned for a Utah talent competition and although very reluctant to sing in public, he recieved a standing ovation after singing "I Will Always Love You". He has since participated in the talent competition Star Search, where he won in the Junior Singer category at the age of 12.
American Idol
David Archuleta is currently a contestant in the Top 24 on American Idol's seventh season, though controversy of a possible "plant" by the producer's has been speculated due to the fact that he has past ties to American Idol. (The following information is from a website that profiles "Latter-day Saint and/or Utah Film Personalities," 'David won $100,000 in the Junior Singer category of Star Search in 2003 when he was 12 years old. Towards the end of the American Idol first season, a friend of the family called about a show Jenny Jones was doing to feature talented kids across America and thought David should audition for the show. A show producer called and listened to an a capella recording of David singing "And I Am Telling You", and was so impressed, she asked him to rush a video and CD to them. A few days later, David and his dad were on a plane to Chicago to be on the show. While there he met AJ Gil from American Idol and formed a friendship with him, and a week later while in LA, met with AJ who then introduced David to the rest of the American Idol finalists including Kelly, Justin, Tamyra, Christina, Nikki, RJ, Jim, Ryan, and Ejay, and asked him to perform for them (this can easily be viewed on YouTube). They were absolutely amazed with his singing, and within a few days David was being introduced to many TV and Record label producers and executives.'
Along with approximately 11 other contestants, this has led some, most notably the website Votefortheworst.com, to believe that some of these very contestants (or as the website says, "plants," to keep the show looking like they were really finding unknowns) have been placed there by the producers, perhaps to avoid having another amateur like Sanjaya Malakar to go as far as they can, or to ensure a more polished, professional - and in dollar terms, marketable - artist wins, as well as attracting more viewers for the competition.
