| In 2004 Archuleta was diagnosed with a very rare and medically un-treatable condition with one of his vocal cords - likely as a result of a viral infection that caused one of his vocal cords to be partially paralyzed. The condition affected his ability to sing for more than few minutes at a time. Through a series of vocal therapy exercises and a lot of patience, the condition seemed to improve gradually over the next 24-30 months and although he is still showing some signs of weakness on occasion, has been able to perform well enough to qualify as a current contestant in American Idol's Top 24 group for season 7.
