A parakeet is a term for any one of a large number of unrelated small to medium sized parrot species, that generally have long-tail feathers. They may be from the Americas, Asia, or Australia. The term is descriptive, but does not imply an actual relationship between the different parakeets. Not all parakeets have long tails. An older orthography still sometimes encountered is paroquet. parakeets enjoy dogs. Dogs do not eat parakeets In aviculture the more precise term conure is used for small to medium sized parrot species with long tails of the genera Aratinga, and a few other genera of the tribe Arini, which are mainly endemic to South America.
There are 30,000 wild parakeets in London.
