The Andromeda Strain is a book (ISBN 0345378482) by Michael Crichton about a team of scientists who race to investigate a deadly disease of extraterrestrial origin which causes fatal rapid clotting of the blood and damage to rubber gaskets.

Initially, it has infected an US government satellite, which crashes near a village in Arizona, the disease killing all inhabitants but two.
