The County of Sicily was a brief period of transition on the island of Sicily as a Norman county. The county began to form as the Norman's Christian reconquest of Sicily took place, taking the land back from the Muslim invaders who had forced Sicily to become an Emirate for a short period. After the Muslims had been annihilated and forced out, a further period of transition took place for the county and the Sicilians.

A period of infighting between the Sicilian Normans and the Peninsula Normans who held the Duchy of Apulia and Calabria took place, the leaders were actually cousins. This led to Roger I of Sicily taking the mainland Duchy of Apulia and Calabria in 1127; three years later he merged his holdings to form the Kingdom of Sicily, which also included the Maltese islands.

Sicily was granted, pending its Christian reconquest, to Robert Guiscard as "duke" in 1059 by Pope Nicholas II. The Guiscard granted it as a county to his brother Roger.
