Angel Locsin (born Angelica Colmenares on April 23, 1985), is a television and film actress, commercial model, film producer and fashion designer in the Philippines who was introduced in GMA Network's youth-oriented program, Click. Locsin rose to prominence after being cast as one of the lead stars in the fantasy-themed television series Mulawin in 2004. Soon after, she starred as the superheroine Darna in the TV adaptation of the popular Mars Ravelo comics hit. Locsin top-billed in several films and is known as the screen love interest of Richard Gutierrez and Dennis Trillo. When her contract expired last March 2007, Angel did not renew her contract to her mother studio, GMA Network and signed an exclusive contract in ABS-CBN despite her booming career in GMA. According to her its just a career move. She is now the lead star in the most awaited soap opera of ABS-CBN, Lobo where she paired to Piolo Pascual. Angel was recently awarded in Yes Magazine as the Most Beautiful Woman in the Philppines. She was also awarded in 38 Box Office Entertainment Awards as the Princess of Philippine Movies. Locsin is now rumored to play the sexy comic superhero in Mars Ravelo's Varga as Varga.

Biography

Early life

She grew up in Bulacan, Philippines. Her parents separated when she was fourteen, and she has since lived with her father (Angelo Colmenares).

Education

Locsin is a native in Bulacan where she spent her Elementary education. Angel also finished studying Highschool in University of Santo Thomas, Manila. In 2007 she attended a short-course for fashion design in London, United Kingdom.

Career

Early work

Locsin's career in show business began after she was directly discovered by a talent scout while she cut classes with a friend and was shopping at SM City North EDSA in Quezon City. She auditioned for several commercials. She was supposed to be part of the Batch 9 of ABS-CBN's Star Circle Batch 9, but she failed to sign a contract with ABS-CBN's Talent Center because her father, Angelo Colmenares did'nt agree. After a year, she became a contract star of GMA Artist Center.

Film

Locsin was first seen in films such as Ping Lacson Supercop, Mano Po 2 and Kuya. Then in 2004 she made her first lead role in Singles with Ara Mina and Aubrey Miles which was produced by Regal Films. Since then she became a regular film actress. She starred also in Mano Po 4 and Sigaw. Luckily, In 2005 Locsin made her first valentine movie from GMA Films entitled Let the Love Begin with Richard Gutierrez which grossed P120 Million Pesos on the box-office. She also reprised her role as Alwina in Mulawin:The Movie. In early 2006, Locsin made another box-office hit I Will Always Love You which grossed more than P160 Million Pesos. In that same year, she starred in TXT and her Metro Manila Film Festival entry Mano Po 5. She also reunited with Richard Gutierrez in The Promise, in which their roles were considered more mature than any they have done in the past. Locsin also produced her own film entitled Angels which was shown in theaters in April 12, 2007. Since Locsin signed an exclusive contract in Star Cinema she will not be able to make films in other film productions in the Philippines. Malou Santos also confirmed that she and Piolo Pascual will be doing their first movie together tentatively titled I Knew I Loved You under Star Cinema. Recently, Piolo Pascual confirmed that she and Angel will be having a movie that is supposed to be shoot in Hawaii, USA on June, 2008. The said film will be directed by Rory Quintos. Locsin is also one of the choices of Gabby Concepcion for a Movie tandem under Star Cinema.

Modeling

Locsin is one of the most famous product endorser in the Philippines. Locsin already previously appeared as an endorser of several products such as Coca Cola, Posh Colognes, Century Tuna, Cream-O, Animax Initial 3D, Greenwich, Maxipeel, CD Jeans, Globe, Petit Monde, Johnson Johnson and Ricky Reyes. She became popular model when she was shown in her TV Ad for Axe in 2004. Locsin continuously received many commercial offers especially when she starred in Darna in 2005 which received 52.1%, the highest rating in the Philippines TV history. Since then Locsin became one of the most famous TV Ad model and endorser among of her numerous TV Ads of Axe, Robitussin, Eskinol, Happee Toothpaste, Mcdonalds, Head & Shoulders, San Mig Coffee, Smart Communications, Avon, Centrum, Magnolia Health Tea, Avon Wish of Happiness, McDonalds Summer Colors of Love, Myra-E Lotions, and Myra-E Skin Vitamins. She is also an official image endorser of Jag Skinny Jeans & Jag Black, Calayan, W.L Foods, AB Spire Notebooks, Priston Netplay, Belo Medical Group, Lotus Ballpen, Converse Shoes and Timex Watches. In 2007, Locsin was also chosen to endorse candidates for Senator such as Sen.Manny Villar and Koko Pimentel also for the Gabriela Partylist. As a result, she ranked as the third top product endorser in the Philippines. She recently launch her TV Ad in Head & Shoulders with her rumored boyfriend Luis Manzano, the commercial was tapped in Bangkok, Thailand. Locsin is also set to have a new commercial from Smart Communications with Piolo Pascual the said TV Commercial will be launch on early May, 2008. Locsin and Pascual will also launch their newest TV Ad in this early April, 2008 for San Mig Coffee. They also shot their newest Timex pictorial that is soon to be launch.Locsin is also set to make 4 TV Commercials this early 2008 one of the endorsements is Myra-E Multi Vitamins and Myra Facial Mosturizer that was previously endorsed by Isabel Oli and Dawn Zulueta. After the success of Avon Wish of Happiness Locsin will launches again her newest perfume brand from Avon Philippines which was named after her Avon Wish of Love.

Locsin is an all-time favorite covergirl of various magazines in the Philippines. She was discoved when she posed In 2003 for FHM Philippines and two times in 2005 where she was awarded as the sexiest woman in the Philippines ranking no.1 spot beside of a famous Hollywood star Ms.Angelina Jolie. Locsin was also awarded in FHM Philippines 2006 and 2007 survey as the second sexiest woman ranking behind Katrina Halili, which is also her Bestfriend. Right After Locsin's arrival from London and signed contract in ABS-CBN Locsin posed for September, 2008 issue ofMetro Magazine she've got a very unique reviews from readers. In March, 2008 Locsin posed in Cosmopolitan Magazine wearing a very sexy bikini swimsuit many analysts appreciated and praised her. Also in March, 2008 where she also posed in the latest issue of Manual Magazine and Metro Magazine. Television career

Early career

Locsin first appeared on television through Click, a 1999 teen-oriented program on the GMA Network, as the tomboyish Charley, where she was first paired with Leo Pascual, then eventually to Railey Valeroso. After appearing in Click,In 2003, Locsin gained further exposure when she was included in the cast of Ang Iibigin Ay Ikaw Pa Rin starring Christopher De Leon, Richard Gomez and Alice Dixson on the lead roles. In 2004 she starred in All Together Now and Love to Love. In the same year when she got her big break where she was chosen by GMA Network to star as lead role character with Richard Gutierrez as her loveteam in Mulawin which premiered in August 02, 2004 and lasted in March 18, 2005. The series got the highest rating of 48.6% and made an empressive 35.5%, as over-all ratings.

Darna

Locsin got her Stardom when she auditioned and won the role Darna in GMA Network's telefantasya entitled Mar's Ravelos Darna which aired in 2005. Locsin was paired to Dennis Trillo portraying the role Efren. Darna premiered having 47.1% and earned up to 52.1% in the fourth episode the rating was the highest ratings on Philippine television ever. The series got over-all ratings of 39.9%. After of the success of Darna she received several commercials and endorsements, film projects, lead role projects in GMA Network and popularity in the whole Philippines.

Majika

After her very successful show, Locsin starred again with Dennis Trillo in Majika. The series was produced by GMA Network. It first aired on March 20, 2006 and officially ended on September 29, 2006, although the last two episodes were replayed on the following two weekends for the benefit of those who weren't able to watch them after super typhoon 'Milenyo' hit the mid-northern part of the Philippines from September 27-28 and temporarily deprived much of the Luzon area of electricity. She played the role Sabina, the elder daughter of Ayesa (Carmina Villaroel) and Garam (Zoren Legaspi). Her love enterest was Argo (Dennis Trillo) and her main rival was Juno that was played by Katrina Halili.

Asian Treasures

In 2007 Locsin gave her extra-ordinary performance when she starred in Asian Treasures with Robin Padilla. It was the first Philippine drama shot in multiple countries such as Mongolia, Thailand and China. Its pilot episode, which garnered a 41.8% rating (Mega Manila), aired on January 15, 2007. The series gained much popularity even before the pilot episode was telecast. This was because of the popularity of its two leads, Robin Padilla and Angel Locsin. It was the most expensive TV series ever produced in the Philippine television costing more than 140 million pesos, roughly 3.1 million dollars.The ending was shot in Luneta Park, Manila. However this was her last project in GMA Network after she transferred to ABS-CBN.

Move to ABS-CBN

On August 11, 2007 Locsin finally signed a 2-year exclusive contract in ABS-CBN after she left to GMA Network. Angel was warmly welcomed by ABS-CBN executives including Eugenio Lopez III, Malou Santos and Ms.Charo Santos. Angel said that she is really excited to work with Claudine Barretto, Bea Alonzo, Anne Curtis and Judy Ann Santos. After the contract signing she guested in ASAP 07' as a very special guest she was also warmly welcomed by ABS-CBN Stars. The seriest got an amazing 20.6%, the highest rating gathered by ASAP history so far. Angel also became a celebrity player in Kapamilya Deal or No Deal, where Locsin's mother was featured.,which also got a rating of 32.8%. Angel also guested in ABS-CBN shows such as Boy & Kris, Wowowee, The Buzz, Umagang Kayganda etc. Locsin was also paired to Sam Milby in their Maalaala Mo Kaya episode entitled Pilat, the episode was praised by viewers and it got a very good recepcion. Locsin and Milby also proved that they have a good chemistry.

2008-present

In early 2008 Locsin was paired to Piolo Pascual in their first ever show together Lobo which premiered in January 28, 2008 having 27.7%,the highest reception among (Palos & Kung Fu Kids) in Mega Manila ratings.The whole cast of Lobo including Angel was so ecstatic with the warm recepcion of the viewers to their first episode.. While the said teleserye is now the second most-watched program all over urban Philippines. Truly signs that people still love, support and admire Angel even though she's no longer in her former network, GMA. Locsin still proves that she is still the Queen of Primetime television. Locsin recently promoted Lobo in Dubai with Piolo Pascual and Shaina Magdayao. Recently this year, Locsin received such appreciations from her performances of Lobo including the Directors of Lobo, FM Reyes and Cathy Garcia-Molina who keep on praising Locsin's performance in acting, also co-stars Piolo Pascual and Dimples Romana who always appreciate Locsin's acting. Locsin proved that she had improved so much in acting from the way she acts before. Locsin is very graceful to the impressive reception of Lobo which became the 3rd Most-watched Weekday program in NUTAM Survey for March 2008. While the said teleserye is over powering the primetime blocks of (PBB Teen Edition Plus, Palos, Kung Fu Kids, Lovers and TV Patrol World) in ABS-CBN Primetime Programs for Mega Manila TV Ratings. Lobo is now the highest rated ABS-CBN Primetime show in the Philippines.

Princess

Locsin became a princess nor a queen in GMA Network because of her very successful career. Now that she is in ABS-CBN she is called by most as the premier princess of ABS-CBN beating Judy Ann Santos and Anne Curtis. Locsin is also awarded as the Princess of Philippines Movies and TV in 2005. In 2008 she was again awarded as the Princess of Philippine Movies.

Competition

Since Locsin is already a Kapamilya Star she was since then to Marian Rivera who was chosen for the title role of Marimar instead of her and was offered to reprise the role of Locsin as Darna in Captain Barbell Meets Darna. A week before of being a Kapamilya star of Locsin, she was directly compared to KC Concepcion who finished studying in Paris, France and followed her Mother, Sharon Cuneta to live here in the Philippines and signed also a contract in Star Cinema and ABS-CBN likewise with Angel. Since then they've been compared each other if who is the real princess of ABS-CBN but still Locsin proved that she dont need to be compared to any actressess. Many rumored that ABS-CBN will buy the right for a remake of Maria Mercedes and give the title role to Locsin. Recently, ABS-CBN already bought the rights for such Mars Ravelo's comics hits one of them is Varga, the first Darna. Now rumored that ABS-CBN chosen Locsin for the title role of Varga. If this happen, Varga might be compete to Captain Barbell Meets Darna that will be starred by Richard Gutierrez in GMA Network.

Relationships

Locsin dated the late actor Miko Sotto, son of Ali Sotto. Locsin also had a relationship with Oyo Boy Sotto which lasted in January, 2007. Locsin is now rumored dating with Luis Manzano, they were rumored seen together in Bangkok, Thailand during the 2008 Holy week.

Locsin's residence before was in Quezon City, where she and her Father lived together. In 2007 Locsin bought a house which cost more than Php 16 Million Pesos. Its her achievement due to hardwork. She also acquired a new Hummer for 10 Million Pesos making her as the first Filipina to own a Hummer car she can already be compared to Hollywood stars such as Britney Spears, Zac Efron, Oprah Winfrey, Jessica Alba, Nicole Kidman, Mariah Carey, Vanessa Anne Hudgens and many more.

Interests

Locsin consistently helps Gabriela Partylist and other Children Foundations. In fact last April 23, ], Locsin celebrated her birthday in Gabriela, a partylist that help less-fortunate children. On April 20, 2008 Locsin is scheduled for a gift-giving to the less fortunate children in Payatas, Quezon City to help certain poor children to give food, clothing and their basic needs. This will be also her birthday gift to the less fortunate children which is also supported by her tremendous sponsors.

Controversies

Locsin had her fair share of controversy after appearing in a TV ad for Axe (manufactured by Unilever Philippines). Many feminist groups, as well as former Senator Nikki Coseteng, complained about the offensive gestures in the advertisement. In the television commercial, Angel is teasing a man by showing off money and her body, but the man approaches Angel and takes only her money. On July 20, 2007, Quezon City Regional Trial Court Branch 81 Presiding Judge Ma. Theresa Yadao dismissed Locsin's petition for reformation of instrument and/or rescission/breach of contract and damages filed against Rebecca "Becky" Aguila after granting her motion to dismiss, based on settlement of their differences. Locsin sued her manager on December 6 where she asked the court to order the reformation of the terms of the Artist Management Contract which she had signed, to reflect the true intention of the parties. Locsin's five-year contract with GMA expired in mid-2007. Her manager, Becky Aguila, and her father, Angel Colmenares, sent a letter just a few hours away from the first and official statement confirming her transfer, formally informing GMA that her talent would not renew her contract with the Kapuso network. In August 2007, she transferred to ABS-CBN Network, the rival TV station of GMA. She told in an interview with Boy Abunda that she is no longer happy with GMA and she is looking forward to having a better career in ABS-CBN. She worked round the clock all year round from the day she became a star and was left with little time to rest that even brought her to hospitals due to exhaustion. She also had little or almost no quality time with her family, most specially with her blind father. Angel fully supports her family and is the bread winner. With her statement, GMA was disappointed. Although on the same note, Angel did her part while she was in GMA, she made blockbuster movies and top rating tv series, Her official letter was also submitted to GMA in the morning of the same day she finally officially announced that she's switching networks. This unethical and unprofessional manner of informing the network which boosted her to stardom caused GMA and fans alike to frown upon this seemingly ingrate act.
