Keyshia Cole (born in Oakland, California) is an American R&B singer and songwriter. Growing up in the streets of Oakland, Cole knew from childhood that she wanted to become a musician. Her first recordings were with MC Hammer at the age of 12. In the early 2000s, she appeared on tracks by artists including Tony! Toni! Toné!'s D'wayne Wiggins and Messy Marv. To further pursue her career, Cole left the Bay Area and moved to Los Angeles, California. In L.A., she was discovered and signed by the president of A&M Records, Ron Fair. In 2004, she appeared on the track "Never" from the Barbershop 2 soundtrack with Eve. Cole released her debut album, The Way It Is, under Kanye West's G.O.O.D. Music label, on June 21, 2005. The album features the singles, "I Changed My Mind" (featuring Kanye West) and "(I Just Want It) To Be Over".
