In the novel chapter ''.hack//Rumor'' of the novel '']'', Rena had appeared with another character before the one in the ''Legend of the Twilight''. This character was a female BladeMaster named ''Brigit''. In ''.hack//Rumor'', Brigit is beginning to wonder why she is still playing ''The World'' after her partner, Maho, decides to quit the game. She soon encounters a male Wavemaster named Rumor, who tells her the legend of the .hackers that completed the Twilight Event. Intrigued, Brigit decides to continue playing ''The World'', so that she can become a hero like the legendary .hackers. The story then shifts to the time of the ''Legend of the Twilight''-manga, where she logs in as Brigit for one last time to show to her friends, Ouka and Mirelle, who thinks she looks more rigid and aggressive that way. As Rena logs back out, she believes her brother, Shugo, to be a true hero.

====.hack//Legend of the Twilight ====
In '']'', Rena wins ] avatars of the legendary ] and ] in a character contest set up by ]. She proceeds to keep the chibi BlackRose avatar and give the chibi Kite avatar to her brother. They then enter ''The World'' together and begin to play the game. They meet several other gamers there and end up finding Aura's daughter and a vagrant ], ]. As she and her brother try to find her mother, the game's authorities find it illegal and hinder their way. However, they find that they cannot delete them for they are "protected", which meant that Aura, the true maker of the game, made sure they were "undeletable". In the end, Rena and Shugo finally manage to reunite Zefie with Aura.

===Anime===
<!-- Deleted image removed: ] -->
In the anime, Rena's parents are divorced, so she lives with her mom, while her brother, Shugo, lives with her dad. Later on, Rena enters herself and Shugo for a contest, without Shugo's knowledge, let alone consent. Rena and Shugo end up the winners, and Rena exclaims, while on the phone with Shugo, that it was a miracle that they both would win, and says that this 'definitely means we're twins'. Although Shugo feels like quitting at times, Rena says this is actually the only way she can meet him - inside the game. However, in episode 5, she falls into a coma because of a data bug. From there on, Shugo tries his best to revive her. By the end of the series, Rena is finally located by Shugo and his friends and revived from her coma.

==Character==
Rena lives with her parents and her twin brother ] somewhere in ]. Rena and her brother used to live next door to Fumikazu Hayami and his older sister Akira Hayami, who are known as Kazu and ] in ''The World''. Rena is an honor student in her third year of junior high, which she attends with her brother. She is 14 years old and enjoys playing the ''The World''. Rena is actually the first person who had introduced her brother, Shugo, to ''The World''. In the anime, Rena's parents are divorced, so she lives with her mom while Shugo lives with her dad. She misses him, so she meets him through the game. Rena's true appearance is a brown-haired girl with brown eyes. She is seen in her true form in both the manga and anime.

Rena is a character that is quite determined and adventurous and, as well as bold and quick to react. Though her personality can be a bit abrasive, Rena is a character who cares deeply for her friends. She dislikes when others insult her friends, taking them as attacks against herself. Though she tries to act tough, she is also prone to childlike temper tantrums, revealing the personality of the young girl who controls her in the real world. Despite this, Rena has a strong fear of ghosts, which she tries to hide from Shugo.

Her class in ''The World'' is a ]. She believes that "a hero is someone who will risk everything to protect what he loves". She also believes that "''The World'' wouldn't survive if it really had an ending."

==Relationships==
]
Rena has a deep relationship and connection with her brother, Shugo. She cares a lot about him and trusts him. She wants to protect him and enjoys spending time with him. Shugo obiviously feels the same about her. Rena is also fiercely protective of him and dislikes being ignored by him, or seeing him act "unheroish", and has many ways of getting him to do what she wants, such as smacking the upside of his head. Despite their slapstick relationship, Rena and Shugo are extremely close, and she supports him in almost any situation.

Rena has a similar relationship with the rest of her friends in ''The World'', but not as deep. She, however, still wants to protect them and make sure they're safe. Komiyama, her classmate at school and a player in ''The World'', has a big crush on Rena, but she doesn't seem to realize it. She, however, dislikes it when he and her brother argue. She also dislikes how ], a vagrant AI, follows Shugo around, and becomes jealous when her own brother treats Zefie like a sister.

In the manga, Rena has a crush on ] (which is ironic since the original Blackrose hated Balmung in the games), who saved her from danger twice. Her interest in him causes her to wonder who she should cheer for when he was fighting Shugo, but in the end, she chose her brother. She receives a shock when she realizes that the "great swordsman" is the system admin Balmung, who she imagined to be a nerd.

==Trivia==
*During the Tanabata event, Rena says that she is a ], her favorite color is red and that she enjoys chatting online with her friends and listening to music.
*Rena's online name in ''The World'' is the same as her real one, but when she used her old avatar, her online name was Brigit.
