'''Azure Kite''', also known as '''Azure Flame Kite''',<ref name = "pub note">The name "Azure Flame Kite" is seen in the credits of '']'' Volume 1. In Volume 2, and Volume 3, he is instead credited as "Azure Kite".</ref> is a fictional character from '']'', a branch of the '']'' franchise that encompasses several ]s, ] and ].
== Character == | |||
Azure Kite appears within the fictional ] "'']''". He is a Twin Blade-type character who resembles a corrupted, stitched-together version of ], the original protagonist from the first four ], who played in the original "]". Most of the time only one of his ]s are visible (the other one being covered by his hair), and they stare blankly without focus. He also does not talk (although it is possible for him to say "th@nk$" if you give him stuff after you get his member address in .hack//G.U. vol 3//Redemption), and only breathes loudly and growls. Azure Kite carries two triple-edged blades known as the "Empty Skies" and has access to a powerful skill called ] which can only be used by the Azure Knights and the eight ] users. He can also transform into a floating ] orb of light to travel, and often arrives at areas in this form, surrounded by azure ].
Azure Kite is an ] rather than a ] in ''The World R:2'', and appears to exist to destroy ] and ] within the game, similar to a security program.
He is often mistaken as the legendary PK "Tri-Edge". It appears that, when he is not seeking out viruses and AIDA representations, he is merely flying mindlessly in the vast network.
==Appearances== | |||
===''.hack//Roots''===
In '']'', an ] series, Azure Kite first appears in episode 9, just before ] and his Twilight Brigade open the supposed path to the Key of the Twilight. He reappears in episode 13, briefly repairing an error and entering the "Hulle Granz Cathedral" area. When ], the ], arrives at the cathedral, he witnesses his friend Shino being killed by ], and Azure Kite leaving the area. Shino falls into a ] in real life, and Haseo draws the conclusion that Azure Kite, often mistaken as "Tri-Edge" by most, is to blame. Azure Kite then attacks the character Phyllo in episode 14, but leaves before defeating him. In episode 17, Azure Kite finds and attacks ], but is injured and forced to escape. Haseo, on a quest of revenge to find Azure Kite, battles him by the end of the series. Azure Kite wins and Data Drains Haseo, who does not fall comatose.
===''.hack//G.U. Vol.1//Rebirth''===
In '']'', Azure Kite is the main ]. Taking off where the anime ended, Haseo again sets out to find and stop Azure Kite. He chases Azure Kite through ''The World R:2'', and faces him in the end as the ]. After the battle, Azure Kite reforms by using Drain Heart, a very powerful form of Data Drain, and transforms into the "Azure Flame God", a powerful form similar to the "Avatars" used by Haseo and other characters in the ''.hack//G.U.'' franchise. Haseo defeats him with the power of ], his own avatar, and Azure Kite is seemingly destroyed.
===''.hack//G.U. Vol.2//Reminisce''===
In '']'', Azure Kite reappears with two allies, ] and ], similarly corrupted versions of Balmung and Orca from the previous games, together being known as the "Three Azure Knights". This is a throwback to Kite, Balmung and Orca all having Azure in their titles (Kite of the Azure Flames, Balmung of the Azure Sky, and Orca of the Azure Sea). Azure Kite spends most of the game in an ornate casket as his data repairs itself. AIDA copies Orca and Balmung's appear to fight in the game's Arena but are ultimately destroyed by the true Azure Knights. Once Azure Kite has finshed reformatting, the three hunt down and attack Ovan, but are defeated, with Azure Kite losing an arm in the process.
===''.hack//G.U. Vol.3//Redemption''===
In '']'', it is revealed that ] created the Three Azure Knights to delete AIDA. When Aura uses Aina's PC body as a vessel, the Azure Knights attack when Haseo and company get close, mistakingly believing Haseo and the others means her harm. Proving effectively immortal, they only cease their attack by order of Aura. While created in the memory of the original heroes, the knights are incomplete, which is why they look dark and corrupted. The Azure Knights join Haseo's party upon completion of the game.<ref></ref>
===Other appearances===
In all three books of '']'', there are mini-comics showing what appears to be a battle between Balmung and Azure Kite. In this, Azure Kite does not take on his "sewn-together" look from G.U., but merely looks like a flaming, evil version of Kite (with the one eye showing, of course). In the last book of, Azure Kite is mentioned by Balmung as the "Azure Flame". right after Balmung is defeated by him. After Balmung says, "This man...That Kite! Not him...!!" Azure Kite Data Drains Balmung moments after. While this was drawn to promote the ''G.U.'' series, it is likely not ] due to not fitting with Azure Kite's backstory.
===''.hack//Trilogy''===
In the movie, .hack//Trilogy, ] plays the same role as the antagonist for the first half hour of the movie. Though the movie isn't exactly the same as the .hack//G.U. games, Azure Kite seems to just play the same role. He is still pictured as a "stitched up" or "corrupted" version of ] from the original .hack//games. After he loses to Haseo, he never shows up.
