A dunam (or dönüm, dunum) was a unit of area used in the Ottoman empire for specifying the extent of land. It equalled approximately 919.3 square metres. During the British Mandate of Palestine, it was replaced by a metric dunam equal to exactly 1000 square meters. Land area in Israel, the West Bank and Gaza Strip is still measured in metric dunams.
