Camp Rock is a 2008 Disney Channel Original Movie. The musical is written by Julie Brown, Paul Brown, Regina Hicks and Karen Gist. The movie is directed by Matthew Diamond and produced by Alan Sacks. On January 25, 2008, during the commercials for Minutemen it was announced that Camp Rock would debut in June 2008. The sequel of the movie is currently in pre-production.

Production

The Jonas Brothers were considered for the main roles, though casting directors struggled to choose who will play teen popstar Shane Gray which eventually went to Joe Jonas. Brenda Song has a cameo as "Girl Near Lake", similar to Miley Cyrus's cameo in High School Musical 2 as "Girl At Pool". On Disney Channel Latin America, in the Latin American version of Happy U Year, titled Celebtratón 2008, it showed many scenes of Camp Rock, and the song, "We Rock", with scenes of other Disney Channel Original Series and Disney Channel Original Movies as Phineas and Ferb, J.O.N.A.S. and The Cheetah Girls One World, among others.

On April 19, 2008 was the trailer premiere on Disney Channel Latin America, on April 25, 2008 was the We Rock music video premiere and on May 9, 2008 was the Play my music music video premiere on Disney Channel Latin America. Certain scenes were filmed on location at Camp Wanakita and Camp Kilcoo in the Haliburton Highlands, Ontario, Canada.

Previews of Camp Rock started being shown on April 6, 2008 during the Wizards of Waverly Place marathon. The music video for "We Rock" was shown on April 19, 2008 as a part of Disney's Night of Premieres.

Camp Rock is set to premiere June 20th 2008. In Australia, previews and commercials of Camp Rock started showing during breaks between the Australian premiere of Jonas Brothers in Concert some time in 2008.

Camp Rock centers on a teen girl named Mitchie Torres who desperately wants to spend her summer at a prestigious rock camp, but can only attend if she works in the kitchen as one of the cooks. When she's overheard singing - but not seen -- by a teen pop star at the camp, he is completely taken and sets out to find the girl behind the beautiful voice. She must confront her fears, step out of the kitchen and into the spotlight, where she belongs.

Main

  • Mitchie Torres (Adrienne Bailon) is the female protagonist of the movie. She isn't very rich, but had always wanted to go to Camp Rock. In order to do that, she had to work along with her mother, Connie Torres (Maria Canals) in the kitchen and mess halls.
  • Shane Gray (Joe Jonas) is the male protagonist of the movie. He is the lead singer of the band, Connect Three. The other two band members include Nate (Nick Jonas) and Jason (Kevin Jonas). In the beginning of the movie, he is shown to be hot-tempered and does not like spending summers teaching at camps. As the movie goes on, Shane heard a girl, Mitchie Torres, singing that reminded him of the music he used to like. Shane was tempted to find the girl behind the talented voice. He is in a relationship in the end with Mitchie Torres.
  • Caitlyn Geller (Miley Cyrus) is Mitchie's best friend, they met at Camp Rock. Caitlyn is the only girl who wasn't mean or rude to Mitchie. She wants to be a producer and is constantly carrying her laptop around. She does not have a romance with Nate (Nick Jonas) but may be in Camp Rock 2.
  • Nate (Nick Jonas) is the guitarist and vocalist of the band, Connect Three.
  • Tess Tyler (Ashley Tisdale) is the antagonist of the film. She plans to go to Camp Rock to be "too cool". She is very popular but very mean to others, including Mitchie. Her dream is to be a pop star. Her role is very similar to that of Sharpay's in High School Musical
  • Jason (Kevin Jonas) is the lead guitarist of the band, Connect Three.
  • Ella (Anna Maria Perez de Tagle) is one of Tess's best friends. She follows Tess around and does whatever she tells her to do, although she isn't as completely mean as Tess. Ella is the girly girl of the mean girl clique; she's obsessed with lip gloss and nail polish. One of the reasons why she is friends with Tess is because she wants to be popular.
  • Peggy (Jasmine Richards) is one of Tess's best friends. She follows Tess around and does whatever she tells her to do. She isn't quite as cruel as Tess but is still more so than Ella. One of the reasons why she is friends with Tess is because she wants to be popular.

  • Connie Torres (Maria Canals) is Mitchie's mother. She is supportive of Mitchie's dreams, and got her in Camp Rock.
  • Lola (Aaryn Doyle ) has been going to Camp Rock for a long time and becomes friends with Mitchie and Caitlyn.

We Rock-Around the World

On May 18, 2008, Disney premiered 'We Rock - Around The World' Music Video. The music video had many guest appearances from Disney Channel Stars around the world inluding, Selena Gomez, Jason Dolley, Mitchell Musso and fans showing banners and the feature dance move of the song. The music video also included more of the actual performance of Final Jam. For example, it was finally shown there were two singing part of the first verse, Meaghan Jette Martin and Jasmine Richards as Tess and Peggy.

Premiere

Camp Rock premieres on Disney Channel in the United States and on the Family Channel in Canada. An audio simulcast on Radio Disney and video simulcasts on Sprint and MobiTV devices will happen simultaneously. Camp Rock will also premiere around the world after its premiere in the US and Canada.

DVD/Blu-ray Release

The DVD and Blu-ray release for the movie, titled Camp Rock: Extended Rock Star Edition, is planned for a release on August 19 in the United States. It will be released in November in other countries. The Jonas Brothers will be on the soundtrack.
