Cinema of Moldavia is traditionally considered one of the youngest of the former USSR countries.
International recognition
The first internationally acclaimed success became the film of Moldavian producer Mihail Kalik - Lullaby (Template:Lang-ru), released in 1960 at Moldova-Film studios. The movie was awarded the "Prize for Participation" at the international cinema competition in Locarno International Film Festival, attracting the world's attention to the young Moldavian cinema.
An important international success also became the film Man Is Walking After the Sun (Man Is Following the Sun) Template:Lang-ruwith scenario written by Valeriu Gagiu and Mihail Kalik. The world press compared this movie to the popular back then movie of French producer Albert Lamorisse Le Ballon rouge, where, just as in the Moldavian movie, the main hero was a little boy. Vadim Derbenev, the cameraman was awarded the special jury diploma at the International Cinema Festival in Helsinki for this work.
Another one of the first Moldavian films was the Ataman of Codru Template:Lang-ru enjoyed an important success in Asian and countries of Latin America. The viewers called the movie "Ataman Kadyr".
Moldavian breakthrough in the world's cinema industry was the film with scenario written by Ion Druta and producer and cameraman Vadim Derbenev - Last Month of Autumn Template:Lang-ru. the film received simultaneously numerous prizes at the Mar del Plata Film Festival, including the "Sympathy Prize of Viewers". Evgueniy Lebedev was awarded the main prize of the festival "Big Southern Cross" in the best male role nomination. "Remarkably beautiful work of operator" - wrote La Nacion. La Prensa wrote "This film, amongst all the mess that flooded the cinema world invites us to the sources of the true reachess of life". Besides appraisal in Argentina, the movie was awarded in 1966 the Grand Prix at Cannes Film Festival. At the International Film Festival Kino Pavasaris in Vilnius, the operator Vadim Derbenev was awarded the main prize "For the Best Production". However, in Vilnius, the film was awarded only the second main film prize, the first place being taken by the movie of Vitautas Zhelakyavichyus Nobody Wanted to Die Template:Lang-ru
A sensational success, especially in Italian distribution had the film "Lautarii" of Emil Loteanu (operator Vitaliy Kalashnikov, composer Eugeniu Doga). The movie received four prizes simultaneously, including "Prize of Viewers' Sympathy" and the second main prize "Silver Shell". Norvegian Arbeiter-Bladet compared the Moldavian movie to the New York's Boradway musical The Sound of Music. Czechoslovak weekly Film a Divadlo wrote "Every nation expresses to the best its deepest feelings, but Moldavian one did it to the best of all". In 1975, the Moldavian movie rated the first in distrubution rankings in the category "Best Foreign Film", leaving behind traditional Hollywood productions. During the week of Soviet Cinema in Naples, the folm was awarded the "Silver Nymph".
Red Meadows of Emil Loteanu was also another major Moldavian success at the Locarno International Film Festival. Romania Libera highlighted the symbolism of this art work, which made it an unforgetable sight".
Young producers, such as Valeriu Gereghi were also awarded at the International Filmfestival Mannheim-Heidelberg for a short movie Stork.
Cartoons
The animation movies produced at "Moldova-Film reach international public. The cartoon Haiduc, produced by Leonid Gorokhov and Yuriy Katsap, with scenario written by Vlad Druc, was awarded the Grand-Prix of the Cannes Film Festival in the cartoon category.
Natalia Bodiul and Ion Popescu-Gopo, the master of world cartoon arts, cretae together in the context of the Moldavian-Romanian collaboration on the premises of Moldova-Film studios Maria Mirabela. Moldavian cartoons are yearly presented at the Costesti Film Festival.
Personalities
The top Soviet pop-star Sofia Rotaru starred in the musical movie filmed at Moldova-Film stuidos Dniestr Melodies.
