Battle of Pressburg or Battle of Bratislava or Battle of Pozsony, refers to a battle fought at Brezalauspurc (today Bratislava in Slovakia) on July 4, 907, during which a Bavarian army was defeated by the Hungarians (Magyars).

The battle

Margrave Luitpold of Bavaria built up his army and attempted to score a decisive victory against the Magyars, who threatened many countries in Central Europe. The Bavarian army, consisting of three battle groups, was crushed below Pressburg Castle (Pozsony Castle), and a large part of Luitpold's army was destroyed. The Bavarian casualties included the Margrave, three bishops and 19 barons.

Aftermath

After the Battle, the Magyars occupied present-day eastern Austria up to the River Enns, began pillaging the surrounding regions, and destroyed Great Moravia which had already been plagued by inner instability. The Magyar threat persisted until 955 when Otto I the Great won a decisive victory at the Battle of Lechfeld, which brought internal stability to German lands.
