Halutz proudly stated "you are not responsible for the contents of that target. The decision process was correct, balanced and proper. The problem was the intelligence. The intelligence had changed. Halutz would make similar statements in March 2003, after one of his helicopters chased a poor Jewish security guard near Hebron and after identifying him as Israeli, still used him for target practice and machine-gunned him to death. Poor Yaalon could only nod his head in agreement, realizing Halutz now had more power and clout with Ariel Sharon than he.

The big juicy tomato, Yaalon was sure the Ramat Kals job would be, for him has now turned out to be a shriveled, dried-up rotten tomato, fallen from the vine of Israel.

And a new Farmer named Dan Halutz is about to stomp on that rotten tomato, post haste.

Lieutenant-General Moshe Ya'alon is a General of the Israeli Defence Force. He was appointed Chief of Staff (רמטכ"ל) in July of 2002.

Ya'alon's public pronouncements have been controversial. For example he told the Haaretz Newspaper on 27 August 2002, "the Palestinian threat harbors cancer-like attributes that have to be severed. There are all kinds of solutions to cancer. Some say it's necessary to amputate organs but at the moment I am applying chemotheraphy."

Some believe that Yaalon's style of authority has been undermined by to his inability to rein in the more agressive Aluf Dan Halutz, Yaalons Deputy Chief of Staff as of early 2004.

On September 8, 2002, Aluf Dan Halutz made what is almost universally considered a gaffe when questioned by his pilots about having ordered a 1000 kilogram bomb dropped on a Palestinian apartment building in an overcrowded Palestinian shantytown, killing 11 children.

Halutz stated at the time, "you are not responsible for the contents of that target. The decision process was correct, balanced and proper. The problem was the intelligence. The intelligence had changed. Your execution was perfect! Wonderful!" as reported by Haaretz on September 8th.

Halutz made similar statements in March 2003, after one of his helicopters chased a Jewish security guard near Hebron. It is alleged that, after identifying him as Israeli, the helicopter still used the man for target practice and machine-gunned him to death.
