I am currently working on recoding my bot, DeliveryBot, in VB. <--Yes, I said VB. Thus, I will be too busy dealing with problems with Microsoft's "simple" coding program to be on wiki that much. Thx 4 understanding!

WP:NICK Newsletter — October 2008

October 2008

Template:Multicol-start New homepage!

We've redesigned the home page for (hopefully) the last time for a while. If you don't like the new design, the old page is archived here. To match the new design, the newsletter's format has also been redesigned. I hope you like it!

Note about member list

As the member list seems to have gone basically stale, I have removed all members from the list and moved the member list to a page that is transcluded onto the home page. Please DO NOT add your name to the homepage! Thanks! Template:Multicol-break Sorry this issue is a bit late...

Personal obligations have overtaken my Misplaced Pages time, and I haven't exactly had time to send out this issue. November's issue is coming soon. I promise. :-)

Article of the month...

Every month, I choose an article that I think needs help, or is just plain interesting. This month's article is Nickelodeon Magazine.

Nickelodeon Magazine's article needs help. There are no sources. I know, for this page, it's practically impossible to get it to a FA, but let's imagine we're trying to get it to FA status. That will be a motive for us to add sources, improve the writing, etc. Let's work on this article for the wellness of it! </pep talk>

False accusation

My apologies; clearly this edit or yours was not vandalism, but merely an error on your part. I picked the wrong button, and thus have maligned your good name. A thousand pardons I beg of you. Unschool (talk) 23:41, 25 October 2008 (UTC)

DeliveryBot

I hate to say this, but I'm sorry. Firstly, I've moved somewhat away from .NET languages, and if I have to use .NET, I tend to use C# these days, so my VB skills are dwindling. Secondly, I have approximately three coding projects on the go at the moment, one of which is coursework, another is very important to myself, and the third is fixing Helpmebot on the IRC channel #wikipedia-en-help. I'm afraid that I just don't have that much time at the moment as it is, so I'm trying to cut down somewhat on the work I have to do, and taking up new work is not the right way of doing this. Personally, I'd take a look at Huggle and AutoWikiBrowser, which are both written in .NET languages, so the code is similar. Take a look and see how they work. If not, take a look at Cobi's wikibot classes which power ClueBot, but these are written in PHP, so not likely to be much use. I'm sorry that I can't be of more help. Orphaned non-free media (Image:Nicktropolis-logo.jpg)

Thanks for uploading Image:Nicktropolis-logo.jpg. The media description page currently specifies that it is non-free and may only be used on Misplaced Pages under a claim of fair use. However, it is currently orphaned, meaning that it is not used in any articles on Misplaced Pages. If the media was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful. However, please note that media for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable for use on Misplaced Pages (see our policy for non-free media).

If you have uploaded other unlicensed media, please check whether they're used in any articles or not. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Misplaced Pages page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Note that all non-free media not used in any articles will be deleted after seven days, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. Thank you. BJBot (talk) 05:18, 27 October 2008 (UTC)

Non-free media question

A while back, you posted the following on my talk page: "Thanks for uploading Image:Rubytuesday.svg. I noticed the description page specifies that the media is being used under a claim of fair use, but its use in Misplaced Pages articles fails our first non-free content criterion in that it illustrates a subject for which a freely licensed media could reasonably be found or created that provides substantially the same information." This is a logo for a restaraunt chain, and, as the non-free rationale stated, "Because it is a logo there is almost certainly no free equivalent. Any substitute that is not a derivative work would fail to convey the meaning intended, would tarnish or misrepresent its image, or would fail its purpose of identification or commentary." Now, this happened two months ago (I haven't been on in a while) and the rationale has been changed, making this whole thing moot, but I'm curious what your thinking is so I better understand the very tenuous copyright adherence in Misplaced Pages. The new rational is that "This image, or text depicted in it, only consists of simple geometric shapes and text. They do not meet the threshold of originality needed for copyright protection, and are therefore public domain." which strikes me as extremely iffy. Can you explain this to me? Thanks.
