Mosaic Inscription
Dear Eupator, thanks a lot for your swift response. Well the inscription now becomes pretty clear. The first part indeed reads ΜΗΔΕΝ ΛΑΒΟΝΤΕΣ ΗΡΓΑΣΑΜΕΘΑ ("receiving nothing we toiled/laboured/worked" or more simply "we worked for free"). Beneath it you can see two figures and two names written beside them. ΩΚΕΑΝΟΣ (transliterated: OKEANOS meaning "Ocean") and ΘΑΛΑΣΑ, (transliterated THALASA meaning "Sea" - although, as it is common is such late inscriptions, the word is mispelled-the correct form would be ΘΑΛΑΣΣΑ=THALASSA with a double s). The two human figures are actually personifications of the ocean and the sea and the mosaic -if I am not mistaken- should probably date from the late 3rd or 4th century AD. Such mythological representations are actually quite common in the late greco-roman mosaics. They usually depict rivers, mountains even abstract notions such as ΑΙΩΝ (time or eternity), ΑΦΘΟΝΙΑ (abundance)etc. The objects protruding from the heads of the figures should have been crab-grips and wings as you can see in an earlier example from Zeugma here http://www.ubiquityinternational.com/newsimages/oceanus_tethys_mosaic.jpg, where Tethys (the mythological sister of the Ocean) instead of THALASSA = Sea is represented. These attributes would suffice for the identification by the ancient viewer. Of course the Garni mosaic is a later adaptation (maby 2 centuries later) of the same theme. Details have been largely schematized to the point of loosing their original meaning thereby making identification difficult and the explanatory inscriptions necessary (a fact also compatible with the probable late date of the Garni example). The first part of the text has probably to do with the fact that the artists constructed the mosaic without receiving any fee. Similar inscriptions come from mosaics in early christian Basilicas and were intended as a sort of dedication by faithful ΜΟΥΣΕΙΑΡΙΟI artists making the mosaics. In this case I am a bit puzzled because such pagan representations of the Ocean and the Sea would hardly be fitting to a christian establishment... but who knows. Thanks again for your gesture to show me these photos. Armenian monuments (especially the later monastic and church architecture) are absolutely ravishing and (unfortunately) largely uknown--Giorgos Tzimas (talk) 00:32, 22 May 2008 (UTC)
Just noticed that the mosaic comes from a bathing complex. The personifications of Ocean and Sea are more than fitting for such an establishment but in this case the first part of the text seems more of a complaint against a stingy boss... LOL--Giorgos Tzimas (talk) 00:42, 22 May 2008 (UTC)
Founding Inscription
Did you find any of that useful? Unfortunately I haven't managed to trace anything published but I am going to ask a friend who is specializing in epigraphy. Would you by any chance know who has conducted the excavations at Garni. This might help because then I can probably trace some relevant bibliography. I only hope that it won't be only in Russian...--Giorgos Tzimas (talk) 09:21, 30 May 2008 (UTC)
Thanks
Thanks for adding a more accurate link on the Gregory the Illuminator article. I was frustrated by the total lack of information on what Armenians might have been converted from, so I went the quickie route. 65.190.92.233 (talk) 16:34, 27 June 2008 (UTC)
Thanks for reverting
Thanks for reverting on Flemish (linguistics) after Robbie0513 reverted mine. I usually do not mind minors editing wikipedia, but it would be better if they'd only edit the pages they have minimal knowledge of. HP1740-B (talk) 16:43, 17 July 2008 (UTC)

Interview ?
Hello Eupator I don't think that you know me, so I'll introduce myself: I'm one of the few members of the Armenian project on fr, though I'm not Armenian (I'm from Belgium and have no Armenian "roots"). I'm mainly interested in Armenian history but, due to the low number of people interested about writing articles about Armenia on fr, I sometime work on other Armenian-related articles. By default, I'm also in charge of the Armenian Portal on fr. I recently launched a monthly newsletter relating to the Armenian Projects, Des Nouvelles d'Arménie; the idea is about providing members with information on the three projects, like new articles, votes on FA, important progress, ... as well as entertaining the link between each of us. As I said, our number is not very high (13, actually). I was thus wondering whether opening ourselves to the other wiki Armenian projects would be a good idea. In such a case, the en one would be a first choice. I saw that you're the founder of the Portal. Also, whenever I have a look at an en Armenian-related article, I see your name. You definitely seem to be a very good candidate. So here is my question: would you agree to be interviewed for our newsletter? If you do, I think we have enough time to use your interview for the September issue. In case you don't, I would perfectly understand it. So, what do you think about it? You can answer either here or on my talk page here, or on the fr one. In any case, have a good weekend, Sardur (talk) 23:29, 1 August 2008 (UTC)
- Parfait ! Je vois que tu parles français, ce sera encore plus simple. Sardur (talk) 10:06, 2 August 2008 (UTC)

'Opponent'
I cannot wrap my head around why you regard the word 'opponent' used in a discussion as uncivil. If I am not mistaken, this is not the first time. In English, the word 'opponent' has multiple related meanings, not necessarily having to do with battlefields, and one of them is: "one that takes an opposite position (as in a debate, contest, or conflict)". I hope that this would not cause any more problems in the future. Parishan (talk) 11:41, 7 August 2008 (UTC)
South Ossetia
I have referred the matter to the Reliable Sources noticeboard and am thinking that we shall get an answer shortly. I truly have no idea if it's valid or not. Kingnavland (talk) 00:33, 9 August 2008 (UTC)

Armenian cities, towns, and villages
What do you think of Zlerman's suggestion to make kaghak=town, gyugh=village, and large kaghak=city? It seems to be the best idea so far. Since the size of kaghakner varies so widely (>1000 to <100,000) it makes sense to use either "town" or "city" for them. That way we are sticking to a consistent convention, but still using words that make sense in English. Kaldari (talk) 16:17, 29 August 2008 (UTC)

Toros Roslin
Hi Eupator I recently expanded fr:Matenadaran; I hoped I could bring it to the GA level, but I know now that this is not realistic, mainly due to the lack of established sources... whatever. One of the red links in the French-speaking article is Toros Roslin, an article you're working on. Do you think you're quite done with it ? I would like to translate it (and perhaps expand it a bit with French-speaking sources, if possible), but I would prefer to do it when the :en article is stable. Sardur (talk) 00:44, 28 September 2008 (UTC)
- Perfect! I will wait then. Sardur (talk) 10:07, 28 September 2008 (UTC)
- Hi Eupator I wanted to tell you that I proposed the translation as a GA, and the result is quite good till now!
- Cheers up ! Sardur (talk) 00:30, 30 October 2008 (UTC)
- Hi ! The article is a GA now Sardur (talk) 00:01, 9 November 2008 (UTC)
hi
I see you had a look at the school in Nottingham with the Armenian link. Is it possible to find anything on this "Lord Byon School" or createa a stub in Armenian? Hope you are intrigued? Victuallers (talk) 19:24, 28 September 2008 (UTC) You're right I had supposed there would be very little, but when I look there is some nmore useful stuff. It would be great if we could do this quickly. Would you mind if we do this together? I know about school articles and I'm hoping you can see articles created in Armenia about this school. What do you think? I'm very keen to start. I see that the school has links with a school in the usa too. Cheers Victuallers (talk) 21:28, 29 September 2008 (UTC)

Genocide Denial article
I'm in two minds about how to approach this Philip Baird Shearer. At first I thought they were the actions of an newbie idiot, but now I think they might be well planned. However, well planned or not, I don't see them succeeding. Personally, I think he is a lone gunman type: no support, bee under his bonnet, and a lot of WP:OWN issues. His success here will depend on how much support he gets. I don't think the usual suspects will want to be involved in supporting him because they will know a lost cause when they see it. It might depend on what advantage his admin status gives him. Meowy 15:55, 4 October 2008 (UTC)

I have asked you questions at the WP:AE thread bearing your username. You may want to answer them. Additionally, if you think Omer182 is a sock, please tell me who you think is the puppetmaster and why. You can provide that info here or on my talk page. I have not decided to do anything yet, but there will eventually be some sort of decision. Jehochman 15:04, 29 October 2008 (UTC)
