Dum Dum Pop or Dum Dums is a sphere-shaped lollipop named by I.C. Bahr, a Sales Manager at the Akron Candy Company in Bellevue, Ohio, in 1924. In 1953 the Dum Dum Pop was purchased by the Spangler Candy Company and moved manufacturing to Bryan, Ohio. The founder of Dum Dums was John Phillips. Dum Dums are made from sugar and corn syrup that is cooked before coloring and flavoring are added. After pressing, the stick is then added.
Dum Dums are made in about sixteen different flavors; nine or ten of these flavors are classic flavors; 5 or 6 are cycled in and out. The "Mystery Flavor," present in every bag of Dum Dums, is a combination of two flavors in the bag. So far the company has not released any data on how such flavors are chosen, although speculation remains. The only guess is that the flavors are random but some have taken to finding patterns in the flavors used. This combination occurs because the production of Dum Dums is continuous--there is no stop between flavors. This practice results in the flavor combination.
