The concept of information ecology that is being defined here has been the focus of ] since early 1996, when it was conceived in the context of developing a holistic participatory online framework for the preparatory process for Habitat II, the Second United Nations Conference of Human Settlements - held in Istanbul, Turkey, June 1996 - combined with a growing appreciation of the significance of the ] to a knowledge-based digital universe.
