The term diabetes can mean one of two quite different diseases:

  • the more common diabetes mellitus which includes type 1 (juvenile diabetes), type 2 (adult onset) and gestational diabetes (during pregnancy)
  • or the less common diabetes insipidus, where the body is incapable of concentrating urine, leading to increased urine production, fluid loss and thirst.
