Colleen Gertrude Smart (née Hickey) is a fictional character in the Australian soap opera Home and Away. The character, played by actress Lyn Collingwood, began as a recurring character who served as comic relief and busybody from 1988 to 1989. She returned briefly in 1997 before returning as a regular on 23 September 1999 and has remained in the Bay ever since.

Background

The Town's busybody

Colleen is the town busybody. She commonly 'overhears' other people's conversations, and quickly spreads the news around the Bay. She if often prone to malapropisms

Abusive childhood and heritage

Growing up she had an abusive father (who physically abused both her and her mother) and an alcoholic mother. During her childhood, she saw how happy the Stewart family were and dreamed of being a Stewart. Her dream seemingly came true when it was discovered that she was a Stewart all along, due to an affair between her mother and Mr. Stewart. She has since dived into her new role as a Stewart by "helping" various members of the family at every opportunity; much to the dismay of Morag Bellingham, a daughter of the Stewart family.

Johnny Cooper Siege

In February 2008, Colleen was taken hostage by Johnny Cooper, a violent offender of the bay. Colleen burst into the Summer Bay house in the early hours of the morning. Cooper let her go but stabbed Sally Fletcher. Colleen was very upset, but became relieved as Sally healed without any trouble.

New brother and sister

In March 2008; due to earth tremors around Summer Bay, the War Memorial cracked open and revealed a time capsule. Colleen persuaded the Summer Bay Historic Society to open it. When they did, they discovered a diary. In the diary, it was revealed that Colleen's mother had an affair with Mr. Stewart, producing Colleen. This was a shock to Morag who immediately asked for a DNA test.

Sam Holden Murder Investigation

During the Sam Holden murder investigation, Colleen naturally was interfering. Her attempts to help Martha went terribly wrong and Morag, Holden's lawyer, was furious with her interference. The guilt that she had damaged Sam Holden's case got too much and she quit her job at the Summer Bay Diner temporarily, until she was persuaded by Leah to return.

Interference in Morag's relationship

When Morag began seeing Ross Buckton, Colleen inadvertently interfered once again. Morag was extremely angry, and didn't talk to Colleen for several weeks. Finally, they apologised to each other and Morag invited Colleen to her wedding. Colleen was extremely happy, and even gave Morag her something borrowed, but Morag was horrified at the thought of wearing it.

After the wedding, when Morag returned from her honeymoon, she eventually began to accept Colleen as her half-sister.

Role in Alf's relationship

Colleen and her half-neice, Martha MacKenzie had thought that Alf should get back into dating again and set him up with newcomer to the bay Bridget Simmons. At first Alf hated the idea but soon warmed to the idea and had a wonderful relationship with Bridget. However, it was soon revealed that Bridget was after his money and was a fraud.

Closeness to Martha

Martha MacKenzie is her half-neice. They share a lot together, and have a bond unlike anyone else in the bay. Both Colleen and Martha have both battled breast cancer and it was comforting for Martha to have someone to talk to through her treatment.

Colleen once again helped Martha when her husband and soulmate Jack Holden was shot dead. Martha tended to lean on Colleen's shoulder, and the family were particularly happy she had someone to lean on.
