Behind the scenes of ITN...

 :-( --BorgQueen (talk) 12:38, 1 July 2009 (UTC)

I'm not sure what you expect me to do about this BQ. It's not my fault the number of submissions has tapered off. I think we currently have a semi-official number of seven hooks per update, but I had to throw a bunch of updates together quickly for Canada Day, and just made them six hook updates because it was faster. Gatoclass (talk) 13:00, 1 July 2009 (UTC)
Sorry my post wasn't quite clear. No, of course it's not your fault and you've been doing a great work. Just curious, do you know how many "usable" candidates we have to have on the nomination page in order to have eight hooks per each update? --BorgQueen (talk) 13:13, 1 July 2009 (UTC)
There's no hard and fast rule, and quite honestly I can't clearly recall the fluctuations we've had or the way we dealt with them, but IIRC earlier this year we had 220-240 hooks on the Suggestions page AND a full queue and still managed to work our way through them, and over the last several weeks we had around 180-190 hooks and full queues, which remained steady in spite of doing eight hooks per update. But since about the end of May the number of submissions seemed to drop off, so we wound it back to six per update. Now we are back to 180 hooks at suggestions but the queues are nowhere near full, if they were, the number would be about 150 hooks at Suggestions, which is getting a little thin.
So I guess my answer to you would be that around 180-190 hooks at Suggestions plus six or seven full updates would be what I regard as optimal, above that number would be getting a little heavy and below would be a little light. So I'd say we are about 20-30 hooks "light" at the moment. Gatoclass (talk) 14:11, 1 July 2009 (UTC)

"Refer to Canada" test?

Sigh. --BorgQueen (talk) 15:44, 1 July 2009 (UTC)

You seem to have sorted that out now :) Gatoclass (talk) 16:10, 1 July 2009 (UTC)

DYK Mistake

Hi, I made a mistake when citing the hook for the Amak Volcano article. I apologize, could you check it again, the eruptive history information can be found on the eruptive history tab . Thanks, ceranthor 11:33, 9 July 2009 (UTC)

I suppose we are going back to six hooks per update? --BorgQueen (talk) 13:39, 11 July 2009 (UTC)

No, I just missed the fact that the update wasn't finished :b I'm looking for a seventh hook now :) Gatoclass (talk) 13:41, 11 July 2009 (UTC)

Hello! Can you please stop adding unprotected images to the queues? We've had quite a few reach the main page before anyone noticed. (Please see Misplaced Pages talk:Did you know#Unprotected images.) Thank you! —David Levy 20:57, 11 July 2009 (UTC)

Yes I did see your complaint at DYK talk a few days ago. Unfortunately after I promoted that update to the queue last night, Misplaced Pages went AWOL, and I was unable to edit a Misplaced Pages page for an hour. In the end I just gave up. That's how come the image didn't get protected. Gatoclass (talk) 00:16, 12 July 2009 (UTC)
In the future, please protect the image before adding it to the queue. —David Levy 00:23, 12 July 2009 (UTC)

DYK queue

Sorry about skipping the prep and putting hooks directly into the queue; I was trying to prepare an update or two for Bastille Day (which has already started in France) so I wanted to hasten things along by BOLDly putting it straight in the queue. I figured if we used one of Ottava's hooks per queue (1, 2, 3, and 4), we'd have enough to get through the day. rʨanaɢ /contribs 03:02, 14 July 2009 (UTC)

I understand what you're saying, but I don't think it's a good idea to do that. If you get called away or something, we end up with a half finished queue. The reason we have prep pages is so that we don't end up with half-finished updates here, there and everywhere.
Apart from which, I deliberately chose what I felt were the two best Bastille Day hooks to feature in the middle of Bastille Day in Europe. So it kind of mucked up my strategy as well. Anyway, no harm done now, all the Bastille Day hooks have been promoted. Gatoclass (talk) 03:08, 14 July 2009 (UTC)
I wanted to say that you two have definitely been doing a very good job at DYK lately (and DYK has been going much better). Oh, and sorry for putting those hooks in at the last moment again. It was one of those things at a meeting "oh, yeah, Bastille day is coming up... is anyone going to do anything?" :) Ottava Rima (talk) 03:15, 14 July 2009 (UTC)

Panic call

The queue is empty and we have less than an hour until the next update. I am engaged in some other stuff so I was wondering if you could do it. Are you currently online? --BorgQueen (talk) 14:57, 14 July 2009 (UTC)

I guess not... --BorgQueen (talk) 15:17, 14 July 2009 (UTC)

Dominant Factor Test at DYK

Ok, can you be a little more helpful with your comment? You don't think the hook is quite right? Can you elaborate? Possibly propose an alternative? Simply stating that you don't think it is quite right is not a helpful comment, it give no guidance or insight on what you think is wrong.---Balloonman 13:57, 15 July 2009 (UTC)

Yes I know, but I didn't have time to elaborate and I was concerned someone might promote the article with a substandard hook. I haven't the energy to think up a new hook tonight, but I'll try to remember tomorrow. For the record though, I will say that one problem I have with the current hooks is the word "proven" which I think is misleading. The game has been ruled, or determined, or found not to be gambling, but "proven" suggests there is no argument about it, which would not be correct. Gatoclass (talk) 14:06, 15 July 2009 (UTC)
I can appreciate that... and that gives me something to work with. The way it was, it did not help at all except to say, "IDONTLIKEIT".---Balloonman 14:17, 15 July 2009 (UTC)

DYK Nomination July 7 Alfa Romeo (yacht)

Thanks for pointing out the ambiguity about Alfa Romeo I vs. Alfa Romeo II, etc. I just noticed the DYK talk comment you left; I found and added a reference from Sail-World.com (diff) which clarifies this. It's way down at page bottom (on the referred-to site), unfortunately. Newportm (talk) 20:56, 16 July 2009 (UTC)

By the way, if you have a suggestion about which other Ship infobox might be better suited (if any), that would be awesome. Newportm (talk) 22:28, 16 July 2009 (UTC)

Angelshark

I used your choice of lead image in the queue #2 instead, so we won't get two biology-related lead hooks in a row. (We currently have one on MP) Thanks for your work. --BorgQueen (talk) 05:04, 17 July 2009 (UTC)

Hmmm, don't think it was the best choice to restore Colbrith though because that means three of the next four hooks will have US people hooks. Okay with you if I restore the opera hook in place of Colbrith? Gatoclass (talk) 05:08, 17 July 2009 (UTC)
No, we need female bio lead hooks from time to time. I will see if I can replace any of the male US bio lead hooks. --BorgQueen (talk) 05:11, 17 July 2009 (UTC)
Yeah, I thought you might say that :) Fair enough, feel free to replace one of the others then. Gatoclass (talk) 05:13, 17 July 2009 (UTC)
I restored the opera (Isn't it actually a ballet?) hook as lead in the queue 4, replacing one. --BorgQueen (talk) 05:21, 17 July 2009 (UTC)
Good choice. We seem to feature a lot of US football players, so I'm sure it won't hurt to skip one.
BTW, I should add that I quite agree about featuring females from time to time, and was thinking much the same as soon as making my initial comment. It's just that, to be honest, headshot photos get featured a little too frequently for my taste, so unless there is something exceptional about the pic, I generally prefer to see something different. Gatoclass (talk) 05:36, 17 July 2009 (UTC)
I agree on the headshot images and, if you take a look at the archive, you will see I did everything to replace headshots unless the article is particularly well-written and/or interesting. But for some reason people like to write biographical articles more than about other subjects, and copyright-free portrait images are quite often easily available... --BorgQueen (talk) 06:07, 17 July 2009 (UTC)

Hello again! This is just another reminder to please locally upload and protect Commons images before adding them to the DYK queues. (I've protected this one at Commons.) Thank you! —David Levy 09:03, 17 July 2009 (UTC)

Thanks for the reminder, but I didn't actually add that hook to the queue. Gatoclass (talk) 11:57, 17 July 2009 (UTC)
My mistake, I did add that to the queue. I did quite a bit of work on the queue this morning, I guess I must have just missed that detail. Gatoclass (talk) 12:03, 17 July 2009 (UTC)

Re:DYK nominations

Greetings Gatoclass! I must admit I'm a little confused with the recent system. I created the article, but another user, User:Huldra, expanded it greatly (more than I contributed) and so, I would also like for her to get credit for the article. We (and Tiamut) have done this in the past. How would we do it now with the new system. --Al Ameer son (talk) 04:53, 18 July 2009 (UTC)

I have fixed the credits for that article. If someone helps you expand an article significantly, all you need to do is credit that guy as a co-creator, ie credit him/her as "author2" etc. Gatoclass (talk) 04:57, 18 July 2009 (UTC)
Ahhhh okay... Thanks for the tip Gato. Cheers! --Al Ameer son (talk) 06:02, 19 July 2009 (UTC)

Thank you for your note

From months ago. It was notes like yours that helped to see why I should come back. I've taken your advice and am working on draft articles for DYK noms in my user space first. Once they are developed I will post to WP:IPCOLL to ask for feedback and then put them up in article space to avoid the deep aggravation I suffered with Lydda Death March. Anyway, thanks again and happy editing. Tiamut 10:59, 20 July 2009 (UTC)

USS Henrico (APA-45) edits advisory of 10 Jun 09

Gatoclass,

Thank you, sir, for correcting me ref the copyright issue of applying material from the USS Henrico Reunion Association's webpage. I thought I was using the correct attribution process as I had used in college, graduate school and war college, but apparently I wasn't. My late father was a plankowner of and a brand new CPO aboard Henrico in 1944 and I had been a guest at one of the organization's reunions in San Diego 3 years ago when I was still on active duty in a commodore billet. I thought I was doing the previous submission correctly with the best of intentions, but I'm still a new guy at this. Per your recommendation, I will strive to ensure I'm using public sites like DANFS for any future references.

Thank you Gatoclass, for the copyediting and reviewing. I think this piping is unintentional though. Hilarious however. Regards!--Chanaka L (talk) 14:05, 21 July 2009 (UTC)

Well it wasn't unintentional, but it does seem to be a misspelling. I guess I've just been spelling it wrong all these years. Thanks for the nudge :) Gatoclass (talk) 14:13, 21 July 2009 (UTC)

DYK for SS Archimedes

Updated DYK query On July 26, 2009, Did you know? was updated with a fact from the article SS Archimedes, which you created or substantially expanded. You are welcome to check how many hits your article got while on the front page (here's how) and add it to DYKSTATS if it got over 5,000. If you know of another interesting fact from a recently created article, then please suggest it on the Did you know? talk page.

Marine_steam_engine

Hi. I do not understand your addition at Marine_steam_engine#Oscillating: "Alternatively, the piston rods were dispensed with and only connecting rods used (although with this type, the engines could not be double-acting, see below)." What you appear to be describing is a single-acting engine with the gudgeon/wrist-pin in the piston (as per a typical internal combustion engine). Are you talking about the Seaward & Capel design of 1839 (Griffiths, Denis. Steam at Sea: two centuries of steam-powered ships. p. 20.)? If that is so, then it would not be an oscillating engine. If not, what are you describing? oops, forgot to sign Globbet (talk) 21:30, 3 August 2009 (UTC)

Hmmm, you mean if the connecting rod were attached directly to the piston, there would be no need for the whole cylinder to oscillate? That's a good point - possibly I have misread one of my sources. I'll have to check back through them to see, but I may not be able to do this today. Gatoclass (talk) 22:00, 3 August 2009 (UTC)
I removed that statement in the article for the time being as it isn't confirmed in the source I provided, although I'm sure I read that description somewhere. But until I can relocate the source for it, I think it's best not to include it. Gatoclass (talk) 22:17, 3 August 2009 (UTC)

My double nomination

Hi, would you please help me out here? I submitted my own DYK double nomination which is now at queue. My hook highlited two brand new articles. It read originally:

Both articles were fairly elaborate. However, at this moment, while still in queue, only one article remained and is featured there, while the other one, for which I cared even more, has been cut out and discarded. I hope it was not intentional. Please take a look at it. Thanks in advance. --Poeticbent talk 05:52, 5 August 2009 (UTC)
Cc.: User talk:BorgQueen

Why are you linking to an edit that is four months old? Gatoclass (talk) 06:04, 5 August 2009 (UTC)
I don't know what happened there, but here's the link to the first original edit by Allen3 reducing my double nomination down to a single one. --Poeticbent talk 06:09, 5 August 2009 (UTC)
And, here's the permanent link to Queue 1 where only my single article (second from the top) is featured. Thanks. --Poeticbent talk 06:16, 5 August 2009 (UTC)
Okay I've tracked the discussion down. The reason only one article was promoted is because Dravecky considered the other article to be insufficiently sourced, see this page version. Gatoclass (talk) 06:17, 5 August 2009 (UTC)
It all happened so fast. If I knew about Dravecky's comment made today, I would have beefed up the reference section there of course. I check on my DYK nominations about once or twice a day. I had no clue that there was a problem with sourcing, otherwise I would have made the improvements. What would you suggest? --Poeticbent talk 06:41, 5 August 2009 (UTC)
Well it's up to you. If you want to pull it from the queue to add more references, that's your prerogative. I guess we can give you a day or two to get that done. Otherwise, you can just let it go to the main page with the one article. Gatoclass (talk) 06:48, 5 August 2009 (UTC)
I would rather improve on the references and have both articles promoted, if you'd be so kind. --Poeticbent talk 06:58, 5 August 2009 (UTC)
P.S.:I might have to find out first what Dravecky meant by his comment about an incomplete hook fact. Obviously, the promoted church belongs to the churches of Krakow, but his comment says that that fact might be unsourced, quote: "the hook fact is incomplete and unsourced in the first article" ... or is it about the mummies? – I would need an extra day to make sense of it. --Poeticbent talk 07:16, 5 August 2009 (UTC)
I think it's a good idea to ask Dravecky to clarify. Gatoclass (talk) 07:28, 5 August 2009 (UTC)
I will do that tomorrow sometime. Thanks. --Poeticbent talk 07:37, 5 August 2009 (UTC)
I have restored your nom to T:DYK as requested, with explanatory note. Gatoclass (talk) 07:48, 5 August 2009 (UTC)
Thanks for doing that. I appreciate it. I just had a few hour sleep and I'm back at it. I wrote a note to Dravecky at User_talk:Dravecky#Re:_my_double_nomination. I'm hoping to have this issue clarified as soon as I find out what he means. Thanks again. --Poeticbent talk 15:17, 5 August 2009 (UTC)
  • I’m getting more and more philosophical about the whole thing as the time goes by. There probably is some kind of curse hanging over the second part of my double-nom called the Churches of Kraków, now linked, but no longer recognizable. In any case, the most important lesson for me is to accept and let go of it with a smile. Be well. --Poeticbent talk 13:15, 6 August 2009 (UTC)
