Occupation(s) | Script supervisor, voice actress, actress |
Doris Grau (October 12, 1924 - December 30, 1995) was an American actress, script supervisor and voice artist, perhaps most famous for her work in later life on The Simpsons, where she provided the voice for Lunchlady Doris and other characters.
Like Selma Diamond, Grau played gravel-voiced, chain-smoking women on TV shows like The Simpsons and The Critic. She also had a few guest appearances on The Tracey Ullman Show and provided additional voices for the movie Babe (1995). Grau appeared on camera in The Distinguished Gentleman (1992).
She is perhaps best known for her portrayal of Springfield Elementary School cafeteria worker Lunchlady Doris, on the animated series The Simpsons, as well as Doris in The Critic. She also had a recurring role as The Hungry Heifer waitress Corrinne on Cheers.
Following Grau's death from lung disease in 1995, the characters she voiced were retired out of respect (similar to the retirement of Phil Hartman's characters), with the exception of Lunchlady Doris, who returned to The Simpsons after a decade-long absence in 2006 (voiced by Tress MacNeille) in Season 18.
