The Narryer Gneiss Complex is verifiably the oldest portion of the crust on Earth. A zircon from the Narryer Gneiss has been dated at 4.4Ga, although the majority of zircon crystals are about 3.9Ga.

The gneiss itself is generally a leucocratic metamorphic rock of amphibolite grade, with severe polyphase deformation which makes interpretation of its protolith essentially impossible.
