The University of Worcester is a British university in Worcester, Worcestershire, England. It was granted university status by a Royal charter of September 2005. Between 2003 and 2008 the number of applications to the college rose more quickly than applications to any other higher education institution in the United Kingdom.
History
In 1946 an Emergency Teacher Training College for the University of Birmingham was established in Worcester. In the 1970s the Council for National Academic Awards (CNAA) validated the degrees for the Worcester College of Higher Education. The Herefordshire and Worcestershire College of Nursing and Midwifery was absorbed in 1995. In 1997 the Privy Council gave the institution degree-awarding powers and it subsequently became known as University College Worcester. In 2005 the Privy Council granted university status. The institution was renamed "University of Worcester" in September of that year. On Thursday 10 April 2008, HRH The Duke of Gloucester, was installed as the founding chancellor of the university in a ceremony at Worcester Cathedral. The duke will officiate at degree ceremonies and major events, as well as promote the University overseas.
Building Developments
In 2005, the university announced plans for a "super-library" in the city centre. The library would be a combined university and public library – the first of its kind in the UK. It will include a history centre and Worcestershire county records office and will be run jointly with Worcester City Council. A contractor has now been selected and construction is due to begin before the end of 2009. Construction has begun to build 187 new Halls of Residence, and new science labs for NPARU on the St Johns Campus.
Research
In 2009 the University applied for Research Degree awarding powers, to enable it to confer the awards of MPhil and PhD. Before this the University of Coventry assisted in the academic awarding of these degrees. The university includes six national research centres:
- The National Pollen and Aerobiology Research Unit (NPARU) from where all UK national pollen forecasts originate, and testing of new hayfever and anti-allergen devices is conducted.
- The Centre for Rural Research, which examined the psychological effects of the mass flooding in the UK in recent years.
- The International Centre for Children's Literature, Literacy and Creativity is the only UK university centre to employ two full time Children's Literature Professors.
- The Motion Analysis Research and Rehabilitation Centre (MARRC)
- The Centre for People @ Work
- The Centre for Applied Health Research
Campuses
The main campus is known as St John's. A second campus is under construction on the site of the former Worcester Royal Infirmary in Castle Street. Work began in January 2007, is expected to cost £120 million and will be completed in two phases. The first phase is expected to be completed in September 2009 and involves the demolition of existing buildings and the construction of halls with accommodation for 250 students. In the second phase new buildings will be constructed to house the Education Institute and the Business Institute. The Jenny Lind Chapel will be refurbished, as will the room in which the General Medical Council was founded. The University plans to develop a third campus on the former Grove Farm, a 47 acre site 1 mile from St John's campus. This third campus is expected to take fifteen years to complete and will form part of a Business and Enterprise Park for the science, business and sport departments.
Sport
The University is one of the official venues to be included in the London 2012 Pre-Games Training Camp Guide. The guide features facilities and venues across the UK suitable for use by international sporting teams as a training base in the run up to and during the Olympic and Paralympic Games in 2012. The university is home to the professional basketball team The Worcester Wolves,
Awards
In 2008 the University of Worcester was awarded "best social university" as part of the national sports tour in Lloret De Mar despite being one of the country's smallest universities. OFSTED has rated the University's teaching education as "Excellent".
The EcoCampus scheme has awarded the University a "Silver" level award.
The National Student Survey of former students consistently rates the University as one of the top institutions in the UK.
The University of Worcester has jumped 71 places, to 22nd out of 119 Institutions overall in the People and Planet's "Green League".
The institution has been awarded the coveted Carbon Trust Standard.
Students' Union
University of Worcester Students' Union is the on-site union for all students registered at the University of Worcester. It operates a shop, staff offices, a bar called The Dive, a sandwich shop, a lounge area, and a computer facility. The Union holds annual balls at Freshers, graduation in November, Christmas, and during the summer. The sports tour to Spain/France is popular. The University was voted the best social university of 2008. The union's officers are:
