The FIFA Club World Championship 2005 is a football tournament currently being eld in Japan. It is FIFA's biggest club (i.e. non national) tournament, though is not as highly regarded by most sides as the regional tournaments such as the Copa Liberatores, UEFA Champions League and African Champions League
Genesis
The 2005 tournament was created as a merger between the European/South American Cup and the earlier FIFA Club World Championships. The previous of these had been running as an annual torunament between the champions of Europe and South America since 1960; the latter had undergone just one tournament, the FIFA Club World Championship 2000. The 2001 tournament had been cancelled when FIFA's marketing partner ISL went bankrupt.
As a result of this merger, the tournament was concevied as being smaller than the original Club World Championship, which had alsted two weeks, yet buliding on the one game format of the Intercontinental Cup. 6 clubs were invited to take part in the tournament, one representing each regional football confediration.
Format
The competition is a knockout tournament so each team will play two or three matches. The champions of the 4 "weaker" confederations will play in the quarter-finals; the losers will play in a fifth/sixth place match. The winners will then be joined by the European and South American champions in the semi-finals; the losers will play in a third/fourth place match

The matches will be held in Tokyo's National (Olympic) Stadium, Toyota Stadium in Toyota, Aichi near Nagoya and the International Stadium in Yokohama, where the final will be played. For marketing purposes it is known as the FIFA Club World Championship Toyota Cup.
