Kesha Sebert (Template:PronEng; born March 1, 1987), better known by her stage name Ke$ha, is an American singer–songwriter. Sebert first came to prominence through her collaboration with rapper Flo Rida on his Billboard Hot 100 number one single "Right Round".

Biography

Early life

Sebert was born in Los Angeles, California to a single parent and humble financial beginnings. Her mother, Pebe Sebert, also a singer-songwriter, would look after then infant Kesha onstage during her performances and bring her into recording studios. She has two siblings, an older brother and a younger brother. Pebe moved the family to Nashville, Tennessee in 1991 after securing a new publishing deal and Kesha spent the rest of her early years there. The Sebert family was featured in the episode "Wedding Planner" of the third season of The Simple Life as the host family to Paris and Nicole. Although Sebert did well academically, she dropped out of school at the age of seventeen to pursue a music career.

Career beginnings

Sebert survived on low income and few gigs while pursuing her career at first. She snuck into Prince's home once, in an attempt to get him to produce her music. Her song, "Former Overexposed Blonde" appeared in Degrassi: The Next Generation, and two other songs, "Backstabber" and "Chain Reaction", were used on the MTV show The Hills. She also co-wrote The Veronicas' single, "This Love", with Toby Gad, appeared in Katy Perry's video for "I Kissed a Girl" and sang background vocals for Britney Spears' song "Lace and Leather".

Sebert gained exposure in the mainstream media after being featured on Flo Rida's single "Right Round". Soon after, it was announced that she had signed to RCA Records and was working on her debut album, due to be released in late 2009 or early 2010. Her first single, "TiK ToK", was officially released to radio on October 5 2009. The video for the song has a cameo appearance by Simon Rex. "TiK ToK" was featured in television advertisments for season six of Project Runway and appeared in the new Melrose Place. Another song of hers, "Boots and Boys" was used in a later episode.

On March 27, 2009, Sebert appeared onstage alongside 3OH!3 at their concert at Avalon Hollywood to perform their duet "My First Kiss". She also performed at that year's Lollapalooza. Sebert's musical credits in 2009 include co-writing the title song and singing background vocals for Miley Cyrus' The Time of Our Lives EP, as well as featured appearances on both Flo Rida and Pitbull's albums. More recently, Sebert appears on singer Taio Cruz's single, "Dirty Picture", to be released in the UK.
