Visionary art is art produced by self-taught individuals, usually without formal training, whose works arise from an innate personal vision that revels foremost in the creative act itself. In general it has spiritual or mystical themes, or is based in such experiences. Many well known visionary artists have drawn inspiration from psychedelic drugs, although by no means is this a prerequisite.
The American Visionary Art Museum in Baltimore, Maryland is dedicated to the collection and display of such artwork.
Some people choose to lump it together with outsider art, which is often used as a label for art produced by insane people, and sometimes it is lumped with surrealist art.
