The Best of R.E.M. was a greatest hits album released in 1991, shortly after the success of the band's previous Warner Bros. album, Out of Time. The Best of R.E.M., however, was released by the band's previous record label, I.R.S. Records, as was a few more "special edition" versions of their other albums including bonus tracks.
An interesting aspect about this record is that it was only issued in the United Kingdom, complete with liner notes from Remarks: The Story of R.E.M. by Tony Fletcher. It had no alternate mixes (like the other compilation album Eponymous), yet is still enjoyable. It is divided into three songs (all except for the first, which is from the EP Chronic Town) from each of R.E.M.'s five I.R.S. studio albums (i.e., three songs from Murmur, three songs from Reckoning, etc.).
