It has been suggested that Chalice (pipe) be merged into this article. (Discuss) Proposed since August 2009. |
A chillum, or chilam, is a pipe used by Sadhus (wandering Hindu monks), Rastafarians and by many recreational drug users to smoke cannabis, opium, tobacco, etc. The chillum is a conical pipe which has been used since at least the 18th century as pipes by Sadhus in India to smoke cannabis. They have also recently been used by Rastafarians in reasoning sessions and grounations.
Rastafari Ceremony
In the Rastafari ceremony, the ritual chillum used is made of a cow's horn or conical wood piece, fitted with a long drawtube giving smoke and vapors time to cool down before reaching a user's windpipe. The chillum is sometimes referred to as a chalice based on a quote from the Biblical book of Deuteronomy. Thanks and praises are offered to Jah (God) before the chillum is smoked.
