Maharishi Vedic Education Development Corporation (MVED) is an American non-profit organization whose primary purpose is conducting courses in Transcendental Meditation (TM). It was incorporated in the state of Massachusetts in 1993, and holds the US trademarks for Transcendental Meditation and other entities in the Transcendental Meditation movement.

Description

MVED's primary purpose and mission is the administration of courses to train individuals in the Transcendental Meditation (TM) technique. Courses in Transcendental Meditation are led by TM teachers from MVED. The training, certification and coordination of Transcendental Meditation teachers is also conducted by Maharishi Vedic Education Development Corporation.

The Global Country of World Peace is also affiliated with Maharishi Vedic Education Development Corporation.

Presently, MVED has its principal place of business in Fairfield, Iowa. Bevan G. Morris is the acting and founding president of the corporation and Richard Quinn is the director of project finance.

Courses and Services

MVED conducts non-degree granting courses in the Transcendental Meditation technique and other forms of Maharishi Vedic Science and technology which are designed for self improvement.

MVED has Peace Palaces or Maharishi Enlightenment Centers in nearly 30 states in the United Stats. Peace Palaces are also called Transcendental Meditation Centers or Maharishi Invincibility Centers. Through its schools and teaching centers, MVED has created educational enterprises such as Maharishi Vedic University and Maharishi Medical Center and oversees the construction and development of Peace Palaces in the USA. MVED also provides promotional literature to its teachers and centers.

According to the Wall Street Journal, Transcendental Meditation is the name of a trademarked method of meditation only available through MVED.

The terms Transcendental Meditation, TM-Sidhi, Yogic Flying, Maharishi Vedic Vibration Technology, Maharishi Ayur-Veda, Maharishi Vedic Approach to Health, Maharishi Sthapatya Veda, Maharishi Purusha, Mother Divine, Maharishi Ayur-Veda College, Maharishi Yoga, Maharishi Ghandarva Veda and Vedic Sound Therapy are some of the registered or common law trademarks licensed to Maharishi Vedic Education Development Corporation. These trademarks have been sub-licensed to MVED by Maharishi Foundation Ltd., a UK non-profit organization. In addition, the copyrights for the content on the official Transcendental Meditation technique and related web sites are also owned by MVED.

Controversy

In 2004, a lawsuit was filed as a result of a murder at Maharishi University of Management (MUM) in Fairfield, Iowa. The suit alleged that MVED was guilty of negligent representation and that MVED had direct liability for the death of the student. In 2008, all charges against MVED were dismissed by Judge James E. Griztner of the U.S. District Court and the law suit was dropped. Butler vs. MUM was settled out of court.
