Georges Laraque (born December 7, 1976) is a professional ice hockey forward, and a radio host for CFRN. He is currently playing for the Montreal Canadiens in the National Hockey League as an enforcer.
Playing Career
Laraque was drafted 31st overall in the second round of the 1995 NHL Draft by the Edmonton Oilers, where he became a fan favorite with his hard-nosed style of play. He spent nine years with the Oilers before signing a free agent deal with the Phoenix Coyotes in the summer of 2006.
He played in 56 games for the Coyotes before being traded to the Pittsburgh Penguins at the 2007 NHL Trade Deadline. Laraque would play another season for the Penguins before signing a free agent deal with the Montreal Canadiens in 2008.
He and former teammate Francis Bouillon are among the very few NHL players of Haitian descent.
Personal
He is known as "Big Georges" or simply "BGL". Laraque became a vegan to protest animal abuse by the meat industry.
