Mureş is a Romanian county (judeţ) in Transylvania, with the capital city at Târgu Mureş, (population: 165,835).
Neighbours
- Harghita County in the East.
- Alba County and Cluj County in the West.
- Bistriţa-Năsăud County and Suceava County in the North.
- Sibiu County and Braşov County in the South.
Demographics
In 2002, Mureş had a population of 580,851 and the population density was 86.5/km². According to the latest national census (2002), the major ethnic groups in the county are:
- Romanians (53.3% or 309,375)
- Hungarians (39.3% or 228,275)
- Romas (7.0% or 40,425).
In terms of religion, 53.3% of the population are Romanian Orthodox, 27% belong to the Reformed Church, while 9.5% belong to the Roman Catholic Church. 2,770 people (0.5%) declared themselves atheist, non-religious or did not declare a religion.
Geography
This county has a total area of 6,714 km².
The North-East side of the county consists of the "Calimani - Gurghiu Mountains" and the subcarpatic hills, members of the Inner Eastern Carpathians. The rest of the county represents the Transylvanian Plateau with deep but wide valleys.
The main river crossing the county is the Mureş River. Târnava Mare and Târnava Mică, affluents of the Mureş River also cross the county.
Economy
The predominant industries in the county are:
- Wood industry.
- Food industry.
- Textile industry.
- Glass and ceramics industry.
- Construction materials.
- Musical instruments (Reghin).
Along with Sibiu County, the two counties produce about 50% of the Natural Gas exploited in Romania. Also salt is being extracted.
