Maryland Route 99 is a 7.57-mile (12.18 km) section of Old Frederick Road from Maryland Route 32 to U.S. Route 29 in Howard County, Maryland, United States.

Route description

Old Frederick Road begins much further west than MD 99's western terminus, at Twin Arch Road, a few miles east of Mount Airy. The county-maintained road enters state maintenance at its intersection with MD 32 north of the latter's interchange with Interstate 70. Recent development of the southeast corner of this intersection has yielded new facilities for the West Friendship Volunteer Fire Department. The fire department's access to MD 99 is directly across from an old alignment of MD 32 (now maintained as minor suffixed route MD 851J).

Beyond MD 32, MD 99 runs east through rural countryside. The highway passes to the south of Marriotts Ride High School and serves as the primary access point to the school complex. It intersects the southern terminus of Henryton Road (formerly designated MD 101) before forming the northern boundary of Alpha Ridge Park, the source of the Little Patuxent River. It intersects a major county road, Marriottsville Road, north of the Turf Valley Country Club. Continuing east it runs into more built-up suburban neighborhoods, eventually reaching the southern terminus of Woodstock Road (formerly part of MD 125) before entering the western suburban outskirts of Ellicott City.

Passing to the south of North Run Park, the route reaches the northern terminus of St. John's Lane, across from Mount Hebron High School. Continuing east, the route enters the small community of Mount Hebron and eventually intersects the northern terminus of US 29, where the MD 99 designation terminates. Across from the intersection, Rogers Avenue continues east to cross I-70 and US 40 and eventually enter historic Ellicott City, and Old Frederick Road resumes at a traffic circle near Rogers Avenue's crossing of I-70.

History

Previously, MD 99 continued past US 29 onto Rogers Avenue into historic downtown Ellicott City, but the Rogers Avenue section has since been decommissioned. At one time, MD 99 east of St. John's Lane, including the former portion, was designated as Maryland Route 105, with MD 99 following St. John's Lane south to MD 144.

The current T-intersection between MD 99, Rogers Ave. and US 29 was originally intended to be an interchange, with a grade-separated freeway continuing north across the Patapsco River into Baltimore County. This freeway would have been part of the Baltimore Outer Beltway, segments of which were built and are now signed as MD 100 and US 29.

Notes

  • Several short segments of Old Frederick Road and Rogers Avenue east of US 29 remain part of the Maryland State Highway Administration's route log; they are designated as part of Maryland Route 985.
