Die Antwoord |
---|
Die Antwoord (Afrikaans: "The Answer") is a Zef-Rap act from Cape Town, South Africa consisting of three members, Ninja, Yo-Landi Vi$$er and DJ Hi-Tek.
Die Antwoord made their debut in 2009 at Ramfest, a yearly alternative music festival outside Worcester, Western Cape, South Africa where they performed their song “Doosdronk” with punk rock act Fokofpolisiekar and rapper Jack Parow.
The band self-identifies as a melange of several diverse cultures all mixed into one. Because they are white, they have been compared to American rappers Eminem and Vanilla Ice.
The band has signed with Netherlands music company Magnetron Music and is planning to tour Europe and Scandinavia in April 2010 and the USA later that same year. They announced via their website that they will be visiting France, Belgium, The Netherlands and The UK as part of their tour, however, the tour has been put on hold indefinitely after band member DJ Hi-Tek went missing in January, 2010. Tracks from their upcoming album $O$ are currently streamed on their official website to preview the album.
History and personal life
Band leader Ninja (Watkin Tudor Jones) previously founded another art/music project called Max Normal along with female rapper Yo-Landi. In South Africa, Jones is commonly known as "Waddy," but frequently will not answer to this name.
In 1994 "Waddy" fronted a Sony Music act called The Original Evergreens and released their albums Puff the Magic (1995) and Burn the Evidence (1997).
After The Original Evergreens, Jones fronted the avant-garde hip-hop band Max Normal.
Yo-landi and Jones are married and have a daughter. Die Antwoord experienced a surge of popularity and international recognition in February 2010 after being featured on multiple widely-read blogs. Their sudden increase in popularity generated such a surge in traffic to their website that it crashed and was temporarily offline while they moved their site to a more powerful server.
