UFO is an acronym for Unidentified Flying Object. In a literal sense it would include any object in the air of which the nature is not known, but usually refers to particularly mysterious sightings, some of which are believed by many people to be the spaceships of extraterrestrial aliens.
Most UFO sightings have simple explanations as either honest failure to identify natural or man-made phenonoma, delusions or hoaxes. Some people believe that all sightings may be explained this way, while others think that at least a small percentage have a paranormal explanation. The most popular paranormal explanation is that UFOs are vehicles piloted or otherwise controlled by aliens.
Misidentified phenomona include aeroplanes, meteors, birds, stars, planets, the Moon and freak atmospheric phenomona.
UFOs have been subject to many studies over the years, with a wide range of scope and scientific rigor. One well-known study was ProjectBluebook, conducted by the UnitedStatesAirForce. ProjectBluebook found 585 incidents where no explanation for the reported sighting could be found, out of approximately 12,000 investigated reports.
The arguments over this subject often take on a ferocity normally seen in religious conflicts. A number of groups exist that actively debunk the alien spacecraft hypothesis of UFOs. One of the best known is the CommitteeForTheScientificInvestigationOfClaimsOfTheParanormal with Philip Klass as its main investigator.
A wide variety of claims are made in relation to UFOs. Some people have claimed to have been kidnapped by aliens. Many believe that an extra terrestrial UFO crashed in July 1947 near Roswell, New Mexico, USA and was secretly recovered with its pilots by the US Government and military.
The study of UFOs and related claims has led to discoveries about atmospheric phenomena and psychology.
