Transformers 3 is the working title for the third film in the live action series of Transformers films, directed by Michael Bay and produced by Steven Spielberg. It is the sequel to Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen and is scheduled for release in July 1, 2011.

Production

As a preemptive measure, Paramount and Dreamworks announced a July 1, 2011 release date in IMAX 3-D for a third Transformers film before completion of Revenge of the Fallen. Bay responded, "I said I was taking off a year from Transformers. Paramount made a mistake in dating Transformers 3—they asked me on the phone—I said yes to July 1—but for 2012—whoops! Not 2011! That would mean I would have to start prep in September. No way. My brain needs a break from fighting robots." On October 1, 2009, Michael Bay revealed that Transformers 3 had already gone into pre-production, and its planned release was back to its originally intended date of July 1, 2011. Filming is scheduled to start in May 2010, with shooting locations including Chicago and Moscow.

Ehren Kruger, who collaborated in the writing of the second film, was said to be again involved in the writing. However, Roberto Orci and Alex Kurtzman, having written the first two movies, will not return for the third installment in the series. As with Revenge of the Fallen, Orci had earlier refused to guarantee whether he and Kurtzman would return for the third movie, because "we risk getting stale".

In a hidden extra for the Blu-ray version of Revenge of the Fallen, Bay expressed his intention to make Transformers 3 not necessarily larger than Revenge of the Fallen, but instead go deeper into the mythos, give it more character development, and make it darker and more emotional.

Cast

Shia LaBeouf and Megan Fox are to reprise their roles as Sam and Mikaela respectively.

James Avery, who was best known as Phillip Banks from NBC's, The Fresh Prince Of Bel-Air has confirmed that he will voice Silverbolt as Ray Park has volunteered to play a major role in Transformers 3 as a human N.E.S.T. soldier. Also, Tyrese Gibson (Sgt. Epps), and Tony Todd, who voiced the Fallen, have been confirmed to return for the third movie. Due to the revived interest in 3D technology, talks between Paramount, Industrial Light & Magic and Bay have considered the possibility of the next Transformers film to be filmed in 3D.

Bumblebee and Optimus Prime are due to undergo an appearance overhaul for the third movie in the series, in an attempt to make Bumblebee look more mature and Optimus Prime more heroic.

Shortly after the release of Revenge of the Fallen, Orci mentioned he would like to introduce Unicron "for scale's sake". The co-writer also said focusing on more Triple Changers would be interesting.

Before Transformers was released, producer Tom DeSanto had "a very cool idea" to introduce the Dinobots, while Bay was interested in an aircraft carrier, which was dropped from the first film. Orci claimed they did not incorporate these characters into Revenge of the Fallen because they could not think of a way to justify the Dinobots' choice of form, and were unable to fit in the aircraft carrier. Orci also admitted he was also dismissive of the Dinobots because he does not like dinosaurs ("I recognize I am weird in that department," he said), but he became fonder of them during filming because of their popularity with fans. He added "I couldn't see why a Transformer would feel the need to disguise himself in front of a bunch of lizards. Movie-wise, I mean. Once the general audience is fully on board with the whole thing, maybe Dinobots in the future". However, upon being asked on the subject, Michael Bay said he hated the Dinobots and they had never been in consideration for being featured in the movies.

The preview video in the Revenge of the Fallen Blu-ray edition, also shows images of Unicron, but no comment is made on the subject.
