ATTENTION TORI AMOS FANS COMING HERE TO EDIT

Welcome Tori Amos fans to Misplaced Pages! PLEASE take a moment to aquaint yourself with wikipedia policy before making edits to this article. It is not uncommon for fans of an artist, especially one with a devoted following like Amos, to want to insert statements in articles that violate our policy against having a point of view. Because Misplaced Pages is an ENCYCLOPEDIA, all articles must maintain a NEUTRAL POINT OF VIEW. I have noticed that non-neutral comments and adjustments are frequently being made to this article. Please take a moment to conisder your edit and phrasing choice before making your edit.

Here is an example of a NOT NEUTRAL comment that was in the article:

"Tori Amos' fan base began building as soon as her first solo album was released. The tour to promote that album, Little Earthquakes, stunned audiences all over the world, and left them wanting more."

Obviously it cannot be factually proven that audiences were "left wanting more", or that they were "stunned" all over the world. Though the point thie editer was trying to express - that Tori Amos' debut album had an instant impact and that her tour was very popular and appreciated - should be made citing FACTS, such as number of tour dates, ticket sales or album sales figures. The distinction is vital.

What can you do to improve this article?

Despite my own personal love for this article, my feeling as an experienced wikipedian is that it has gotten out of control. Though I love Tori passionately, her article is longer and more extensive than articles about artists like Michael Jackson, who inarguably has had a more extensive and widespread impact on popular culture.

If you would like to help IMPROVE Tori's presence here on wikipedia, these are a few suggestions for things to get cracking on:

An entry on an individual artist really should not have extensive information about all of their projects. That is what sub-entries are for! We have a very healthy and ongoing music album project here on wikipedia; most of the information in all of these individual album sections really should be moved into the appropriate album pages, and there should be a breif 3-5 paragraph section that discusses ALL of Amos' musical albums with wikied links to the album pages.
The content that *is* in this page needs to be sorted through and rearranged. If you're going to have a section that talks about tours, there shouldn't be information about tours in other parts of the article, and so forth. Do some sorting!
Quotes do not belong in entires on wikipedia. There is a seperate wiki called wikiquote (www.wikiquote.org) that has a healthy Tori Amos section. Add your quotes there - and SOURCE THEM!
The trivia section is pushing it. Though it has not been explicitly declared that trivia sections don't belong, it is the general concensus that they are not encyclopedic. If something is important enough in someone's biography to be included in an entry, there should be a way to work it into the actual article. Otherwise it does not belong in the entry at all.

03:27, 13 August 2007 (UTC) This article contains statements that are unsourced and also POV. for example, Tori and Neil Gaiman stealing shamelessly from each other - that quote is unsourced. multiple other quotes are unsourced. as are references to Tori's artistic influences such as Georgia O'Keefe.
It also shows POV in statements such as the one about Tori being one of the world's top touring artists and her tours routinely selling out.
also, this article is misleading. Tori has lost a lot of popularity since The Beekeeper. Her latest album has sold something in the neighborhood of 50,000 copies worldwide, according to the Tori discussion at atforumz.
finally, this article to me gives the impression that wikipedia is the place for committed Tori fans to express their views, rather than any objective look. I know it's impossible to be completely objective about any artist, but her every project is detailed - compare to artists like The Beatles whose far more influential work gets skimmed over. This article comes across to me as OTT, but that's just my opinion.

--Seriously, someone should just take the time to go through and completely rewrite it in proper encyclopedic style removing all the unnecessary personal details and post it here in the talk section for a while as nothing major seems to be happening to this article very quickly. I will do this when I'm simultaneously bored enough and have enough time (possibly within a week). Either that or post an article plan outlining what people think are the major and minor topics that need to be covered...

How, for instance, is "Miscarriages and Marriages" part of Tori's career? This just highlights the over-persanalised content of this article. Admittedly Tori has been very frugal in divulging many details of her personal life, and arguably this has worked well for her success and carving out her persona in a tough/competitive music world, but someone who visits this site and doesn't know who Tori Amos is will want to know the basic facts not coloured by fan frenzied hysteria.Simonmetcalf (talk) 01:26, 5 August 2008 (UTC)

Well, I suppose the question should be: should this be a biography that is entirely career centric and ignores everything that is not directly related to her musical career, or should it be a more well-rounded exposition of significant events in her life, regardless of context? I don't know if it would be possible (or even desirable) to cut out the personal details, particularly since both worlds are so intertwined and significant personal life events have so much driving force in her work, i.e., rape and Me and a Gun, miscarriage and Boys for Pele/Choirgirl, "jumping ship" and addressing social issues and American Doll Posse — and the list goes on. If this information had been included in the discography article, I could understand your asking this question, but this is a biography about a PERSON who is a musician, so doesn't it stand to reason that the article is about the life of the PERSON insofar as it is relevant to her career as a musician? Over a year ago, this article predominately filled with info on her albums (with each album having a section devoted to it), but those of us who have been working on this article felt that since this is a biography, it should involve the life of the person and not just the releases he/she has had throughout their career. The article traces the life of Tori Amos and is broken into periods that reflect changes in her life that affect her as a musician.
Rising to fame, undergoing miscarriages, getting married, changing labels, going independent are all major events that shape the musician's life and work. I think that in its current version, this article is far from "fan frenzied hysteria".--Pisceandreams (talk) 19:10, 10 August 2008 (UTC)

Classically trained

wondering if it's a good idea to describe Tori Amos as "classically trained" when she got "kicked out" of the Peabody Conservatory because she refused to play the classical music the "right way," and to this day can't read sheet music (i'm pretty sure she's mentioned this all in multiple interviews). Not sure where you're getting your info, but it's completely incorrect. Firstly, she WAS classically trained, as the youngest person admitted into the Peabody conservatory, where she was a student for several years (and she continued to recieve training after her ejection.) There was never a time when Tori Amos COULDN'T read sheet music; she simply didn't want to do it during her time at the Peabody (in favor of instead ignoring the sheet music and doing her own interpretations.) This was WHY she was ejected from Peabody, and also why her 1988 album was called "Y Kant Tori Read" - it was a joke. And she most certainally CAN read sheet music to this day, nor has she EVER stated otherwise in an interview. That isn't a slight but significant difference. It's absolutely not the same thing. Peabody has never "kicked anyone out". If you decide not to pay to go you are "not going to the school" - you haven't been "kicked out". Furthermore, Tori Amos did not go to Peabody (implying the Peabody Conservatory) - she went to the Peabody Preparatory Department. This is another "slight but significant difference" and it is misleading to say Peabody when you mean Peabody Prep. A LOT of people have gone to the Peabody Prep. and some of them have started as young as age 3. Peabody Conservatory is a secondary institution that doesn't accept children - much less children who won't read music. Even Sara Chang went to the Juilliard Preparatory department when she was a child - not the Juilliard School. All of her biographical information makes that distinction clearly. The question is, why would Tori Amos' publicists mislead people this way? It is naive, disrespectful, and shows clearly that she is not a "classically trained" musician since she doesn't seem to understand what that would actually entail. It would entail a lot more than a few years at the Peabody Preparatory Department. And the argument that she "can most certainly read sheet music" also shows a certain naivete. Classical musicians don't read "sheet music". They read music - "sheet music" is a term used in pop music.

The page has at least added "preparatory department" to the Peabody claims but it still needs to correct the scholarship thing. It should read "her scholarship was not renewed and she chose not to return", because that is what happened. She was NOT asked to leave. She could have taken lessons or classes there at any time. I don't know if she couldn't find someone to teach her pop and rock music but there are actually teachers in the prep department that would do that. You have to make the effort to find them and you have to be willing to pay them. You also have to be willing to read music even if you are working on improvising. That's like saying that you want to take a creative writing class but you aren't going to read anything for it. I certainly wouldn't be able to teach either kind of class. You'd have to look pretty far to find someone who would. The best jazz players and teachers (Oscar Peterson comes to mind as someone who did teach when he was alive) would have laughed at anyone who thought they didn't need to read music to learn their craft. She is not classically trained. That takes a lot more than a few years at the Peabody Preparatory Department when you're a child. None of this takes away from her talents. But she is what she is. If she thinks she needs legitimacy by claiming classical training then she is the snob - not the classical musicians that she perceives as being the snobs. Peabody Preparatory Department DOES have classes in jazz and improvisation. They did not "kick her out" or "ask her to leave" because of her interest in rock and pop. Peabody Prep. does not kick students out and it is not full of snobbish teachers of classical music only. It's a music institution. You should just leave that stuff out because it shows the ignorance of Amos' publicists more than it proves her to be an "elite" musician. It also isn't fair to the people who teach and learn at the Institute.

Her scholarship simply wasn't renewed...remember the Amos' weren't rich.

  • Which is tantamount to being ejected/kicked-out. If she had opted to pay her own way she still would not have been allowed back in because they decided she was not following the curriculum.
    • Er, not paying to come back another year is usually called "dropping out" of a school, not "being kicked out". Sounds like more of a play for 'edgy cool' to say she was kicked out, if she just quit. It being mutual doesn't change it.

Peabody is very generous with its scholarships for the Preparatory Department. They are usually given more because of financial need than for any other reason. But they are never indefinite. I went there on one for several years and one was also given to my younger sister. But neither one of us kept the scholarship indefinitely. Some years we had one - some years we didn't. They were nothing if not fair about it and always tried to spread out the financial help as far as possible to the whole population. We never even considered it as "losing" a scholarship when it wasn't renewed. We just applied again the next semester or year and sometimes we got one and sometimes we didn't - depending on what was available. Tori Amos was not kicked out of Peabody - and as I said elsewhere - she didn't actually go to "Peabody", she went to the Peabody Preparatory Department of the school. Many Universities have such schools. Indianna University and Oberlin College to name only two. But to say that you attended Indianna University when you actually studied music in their Pre-College School is not correct. Neither is saying that you went to "Peabody" at the age of five and were the youngest ever to have done so. She went to Peabody Prep and was not the youngest ever to have attended the Pre-College School.

Way too long

Here we have a perfect example of fans adding way too much information that is not important enough for a general encyclopedia. Enough already, in summary: she makes ugly girls feel pretty and makes pretty girls feel like they have as good personality as ugly girls. Artists about whom there is a great wealth of information. Tori Amos talks a lot more than most about her creative process and all of that malarkey. I'm not even saying I like it, because I think it makes her sound like a horse's ass. If every artist did, I'd say it was appropriate to include it in their pages, too. Good lord, will someone please trim this article down?? There is no good reason to include this much information in an entry for any musician. The overabundance of personal details in this article make it virtually unreadable. Misplaced Pages is not a fan site. Cut the fat from the article and link to other sites that people can visit if they want to know what color of underwear Tori wears on Mondays. Seriously, people. Get a grip. What should be removed? I don't feel like it's too long. This article is a biography, too, after all. Back when this discussion was started I would agree, but since then quite a bit of "fat" has been trimmed and I see nothing majorly wrong with its length now — yes, lingering fanaticism here and there should be removed or put on a more specific page, but overall I think it's a good, detailed account of her work and life. As I said earlier, I'm not a fan (not to say that I dislike her, I simply don't know much about her) so the decisions on what should be cut would most effectively be made by someone who knows more about her. The amount of detail contained in the article would be considered obsessive by just about anyone not attached to Tori. Per Misplaced Pages, "Misplaced Pages is not an indiscriminate collection of information...merely being true, or even verifiable, does not automatically make something suitable for inclusion in the encyclopedia."
For starters, the volumes of detailed information on each album belong on that specific album's entry. Details of every minute she spent in the studio or the personal struggles she had while trying to record the album do not belong here. They're already documented on each album's page. Including it here is redundant and only contributes to the mess that is this page. Information about specific songs does not belong here. Place it on the relevant album's page, if it's not there already, unless of course a song had some profound effect on her career, in which case it has reason to be here. And don't even get me started on the countless unsourced statements. This article is riddled with "facts" without any citation whatsoever.
Not being a fan, I am undoubtedly in the minority here, however there surely must be some fan out there who can look at the article with a bit of objectivity and realize that it needs some major work. Darth Twit (talk) 17:06, 2 April 2008 (UTC)
I think you're exaggerating the issue a bit. I personally went through this article in 2006/2007 and removed quite a bit of extraneous information. Other editors have done the same. The article is not perfect by any means, no, but the issue is not so glaring to me.
Anonymous editors have a tendency to re-add material that registered editors have deemed as fanatical and over-specific, so over time the work to trim prose down to genuinely important details gets undone. So, yes, I agree there is a problem of over-zealousness, and that along with other issues such as unsourced statements need to be dealt with, but in my opinion it's not with as much scale as you suggest. What "issue" am I exaggerating? I appreciate the dialog here, but you seem to have ignored or glanced over the things needing attention that I mentioned. Details about specific songs that didn't have a significant impact on her career have no place here. Place them in the relevant album's entry. Also, going through and either deleting all of the unsourced statements or adding citations could take days. When you dive into areas of rape, miscarriages, personal relationships, and business matters, you had best find a citation! The issue of length. I'm saying I don't feel it's as bad as you do. A problem, yes, but not a terribly overt one that makes the article unpresentable. For discussions on the past removals, see #Proposed deletions where it was decided to do away with five sections, one of which has since been restored.
I completely agree, however, on lack of sources. That's another thing I've been trying to fix and have plans to improve in the near future. Perhaps other editors can pull out their Amos biographies and reference some things, many of which are common knowledge among the fanbase but need sources nonetheless. Attempt at weeding out the link spam

When this article popped up on my watch list again because someone added yet another dubious external link to it, I decided to be bold and slash the spam. Below you'll find the original list of external links and my rationale for deleting or keeping each of them. --You can never delete TheDent.com. It is not 'stale.' It is the largest Tori site out there with pages and pages of information ranging from lyrics to a biography to every single documented "Tori Sighting" out there. You just have to know how to navigate it. It has everything all of her other fansites have, combined. Just had to say it. :P

I really think you should add The Dent again. It is the largest archive of Tori info period. Also, Undented is often updated with new info, even before some of the official ones. Also, if you want a forum up, FeelTheWord/AusTori is extremely up to date and busy, exceeding 100,000 posts in the few months it's been open. (Many regular members have migrated there from yessaid, which has slowed down a bit since.)

I think you should add Hereinmyhead.com back in. It renders fine for me and I use Firefox. Perhaps it's your version or something? xD Summoner Marc 22:05, 15 April 2007 (UTC)

Mention of Rape

I couldn't help noticing that the Little Earthquakes section lists (among other subjects covered in the album) "her rape". This is puzzling -- although I remember hearing something along those lines years ago -- because there is no mention of any rape elsewhere in the article. Maybe it was added and then deleted at some point in the past (I don't know) but I think it should be mentioned/explained in her biography -- considering "her rape" is referred to in such an offhand manner while discussing Little Earthquakes. I would suggest replacing the term 'rape' with sexual assault, as used earlier in the article. The reports of the incident have always been rather ambiguous, and while no one contests that she was indeed sexually assaulted, the act of rape is merely speculation. While I am sure that there are probably quotes out there from Amos referring to it as 'rape' there have also been quotes from her where she has referred to is as a near- or almost- rape. This would indicate sexual assault. By definition, rape requires actual intercourse where sexual assault does not. Anyone agree or disagree with this? SJM 31 January 2007

I was actually going to include that reasoning into my previous reply. What actually happened isn't clear, and from what I've read from a couple of sources it wasn't actually rape, but the threat of rape/close to forced sexual intercourse. Sam 22:31, 31 January 2007 (UTC)

Good work with all that. My initial confusion was partly due to the fact that its main mention was as "sexual assault" yet was mentioned later (in the album section) as "her rape"; so I hadn't been able to (ctrl+f) find the main mention. "Sexual assault" is a better term for it, I guess, according to that page you linked. The word "rape" without context didn't feel right at all. Lontano 08:40, 3 February 2007 (UTC)
I noticed that there was a still a mention of her 'rape' in this article, and my research suggests that she was never raped, so I replaced it with 'sexually assaulted'.Darkcraft (talk) 03:53, 14 November 2008 (UTC)

Proposed deletions

In the light of the recent concerns of the article becoming too large, I'd like to propose a few deletions:

  • "Fans" section - It really doesn't contain any substantial information save the bits about fanzines, and, of course, the claims of celebrity fans is not only unsourced but largely subjective. It would be better touched on in a sentence or two in a place like the introduction.
  • "Books by or about Amos" - the large part of these are sheet music folios. Notable enough? Seems kind of obsessive to me.
  • "Conflict with the music industry" - another example of something that should be lightly touched on elsewhere, not devoted a whole section to. — Sam 00:10, 6 April 2007 (UTC)
I agree with those. The first two are completely unnecessary, and the third would be credible if it were sourced, but its not. As it stands, it is a borderline violation of WP:BLP. --Mus Musculus 01:13, 6 April 2007 (UTC)

I've removed "Fans" and the "Books" sections. "Conflict with the music industry" is a bit hairier and I would like to wait to give more people a chance of discussing it before its removal. New proposals:

  • "Acting" - Amos has appeared once as a real character in a movie, the big-band singer in Mona Lisa Smile. The rest of the section just talks about roles that were offered to her or tiny appearances in less notable productions, and her contributions to movies' soundtracks are of course not acting.
  • Grammy Awards - she hasn't actually won any Grammy awards, these are just nominations. — Sam 15:56, 6 April 2007 (UTC)

The Grammy is so respected in the music industry that the nomination is notable in and of itself. I have heard in several other venues the nomination mentioned so I feel that this portion should stay as listedPoeticvirgo (talk) 18:56, 24 February 2008 (UTC)

I think removing the acting section is good but I don't think it shouldn't go without mention elsewhere in the article. I believe it's worthy of note, but not of it's own section. Perhaps if you were to delete it you could work it in else where? :) Summoner Marc 18:20, 6 April 2007 (UTC)

Yes, that is something I am concerned with. We can reuse the picture and add a mention of her role in Mona Lisa Smile to the relevant time period. Same goes with notable information in the already deleted sections. I plan on adding a mention of the fanzines as soon as I can find a reliable source of information for them as it was just about the only bit worth salvaging in the two deleted sections. — Sam 18:44, 6 April 2007 (UTC)

Grammies - why are they mentioned?

If I am reading the Grammy section correctly, Amos has been nominated multiple times but never won a Grammy. To me it truly seems excessive to list this. Contrast Paul Simon's Misplaced Pages page. He has won multiple Grammies, yet they have parenthetical mention in the article. They are not stressed the way Amos's *nominations* are.

I suggest deleting the Grammy section. At most, it seems sufficient to state that she has been nominated several times but not won any.

It seems skewed to list these unless someone is going to go through and list all Grammy nominations for famous musicians like Simon.

Outline Overhaul

The main outline was in poor shape. As it was, there was "Biography" with only one subheading called "Early years" and then it launched into different section titled "Albums". Outlines shouldn't have only 1 subsection, if it does then that means it needs tweaking because the idea of subsections is to categorize the different points that fall under a main section. For example: if you have a section titled "Birds" and a subsection titled "Types of Birds" and then another section titled "Fish" and subsections titled "Saltwater Fish," "Freshwater Fish," "Tropical Fish," and "Brackish Fish" then the single "Types of Birds" subsection needs to be rearranged and included as part of "Birds", or split into more specific subsections.

With the goddess Tori's page, I kept the main heading as "Biography" and made "Early Years", "Y Kant Tori Read" and then a new subsection called "Solo Career" all fall under the "Biography" section. Then within the "Solo Career" subsection, all of the albums and what not became sub-subsections. I didn't see the point in having a section called "Albums" when a section titled "Discography" appears further down.

I also roped "CD singles", "Discography" and "Videography" together for the same reason as above.

I hope this makes sense and that people realize I'm not trying to mess with the page or anything. Please share your thoughts. --Pisceandreams 16:52, 9 August 2007 (UTC)

I like this approach, however there were concerns brought up in the past that biography information should be separated from album information which is why "Early years" was under "Biography". I don't know how that stands in terms of Misplaced Pages guidelines, but it's something to consider. Also, I think it would be a good idea to keep headings from going beyond the second level just for the sake of aesthetics; third-level headings are a bit more difficult to distinguish than second. I've been thinking about outline headings and realize that there doesn't necessarily need to be one entitled "Biography" since it's understood that this is about the artist. I think the overall quality and organization of the article could be improved by having fewer sub-sections, which can be accomplished by lumping some albums together, as opposed to each album having its own section. Cannibal Corpse

Hey everyone, it's been around the internet for a while, but I'm wondering, did Tori Amos in fact offer her voice upon the song "Stripped, Raped, And Strangled" by Cannibal Corpse? Or was this a clever edit job done by some internet prankster? Just in case those I inquire to aren't familiar with it, the song begins with Tori advertising RAINN, before going into the song. Throughout the song, you hear her sampled later. There are various things in some of her music that can be taken as references to him, particularly in "Caught a Lite Sneeze" on her album Boys for Pele: "Caught a lite sneeze / Dreamed a little dream / Made my own pretty hate machine", Pretty Hate Machine being an album by Nine Inch Nails. I am a sincere fan of Tori's (have been for 10+ years), but I think the article on Tori could use some re-working (and serious editing). Given that the articles devoted to each of her albums are lacking in many respects, what do you guys think about removing some of the info on her albums from this main article to use in the album articles? Early utilization of the internet

I think that Amos' early utilization of the internet as a major marketing tool is a pertinent and relevant issue of interest for the article. Amos is the first major-label artist in global history who made a song (in this case "Caught a Lite Sneeze") available to be downloaded for free on the internet. Later, she was the first artist to release a CD that could be used as a "key" to unlock content available exclusively on the web. And there seems to historically have been an unusual amount of emphasis (by the press) put on her internet following; in particular a review of archives of press articles/interviews from 1991-1996 make almost constant reference to the huge number of fan web pages that existed. Abbreviated American Doll Posse Information

I really think that the fact that Amos opened the tour as characters from her album (and basically broke her own tour boundaries by singing straight at the mic and inclooding online bootlegs) should be mentioned briefly in that section of the article.

The Original Sinsuality/Summer Of Sin section includes a bit about her doing covers (which isn't extremely odd because she's always done a lot of covers) so I don't see why the doll changing bit shouldn't be included in the ADP Tour section because it's a BIG part of what the tour was.

I'm just afraid to add it because I'll feel sad if it's deleted. Meh, I'll add it anyway and if you don't like it you can do what you want right?

Kate Bush relevancy

It has been quite some time since the passage on Kate Bush was added and debated over, and I still see absolutely no relevancy in its presence. Whether or not Tori Amos has some similarities to Kate Bush is not up to the article to decide and really it holds no relevancy to her biography. At most it deserves a listing in the see also, but even that is insulting to Amos in my opinion. She may have gotten compared to her early in her career, but she definitely has distinguished herself from any such comparisons in the past nearly twenty years of her career. Let us please remove it. I also don't think it's fair to lump that paragraph involving Kate in at the end of that section either. Tori was influenced by Zeppelin, not Bush. She listened to Jimi Hendrix. Tori Amos and Kate Bush together are the gauge of today's alternative side of the singer-songwriter genre. No act (e.g. Regina Spektor, Fiona Apple) avoids getting compared to the two by any of the big magazines or by fans in general. I don't. Who on the pop charts in the early 90s was recording piano-driven music? In fact, one of the reasons Atlantic wanted early demos of Little Earthquakes redone was because of its heavy use of piano when they wanted guitars. Tori's stagename

It is written in the article that she takes the stage name Tori because someone says to her that she looks more like a "Tori" than a "Myra Ellen" and places this in the time frame of when she recorded Baltimore. I've read an article that claimed Amy Lee of the rock band Evanescence, who also uses a piano as her primary instrument, is a fan of Tori Amos and credits her as a pioneer. I can try harder to find that source if you insist. I've heard other musicians refer to Tori Amos as a pioneer. Here are other sources:

Article 1 doesn't list an author. We don't know who wrote it, or for what purpose, other than to sell albums. Article 3 is written from a biased perspective (Rhino owns the rights to Amos' back catalogue, once held by Atlantic). Article 2 is from a more reputable music source, but the statement of Amos being a pioneer is very narrow in scope.

This is making assertions that don't have a credible source. Also, as of 2008, Amos is no longer noteworthy of this. This really should be in past tense until she releases work that has a significant impact on music, society, etc.
Don't get me wrong, I am a huge Tori fan of over a decade, but the text as it currently appears in the article is slanted/biased. I appreciate your wanting to improve the article Convergence Dude, but what Samuel Grant said about the neutrality of your edits is true. I am skeptical that peer-reviewed academic criticism, which we generally treat as the best available source, does not belong in this article. The article in question - which I encourage you to look at - deals substantially with Amos's work, including musical analysis of two of her songs, and analysis of Gaiman stories written for her tourbooks. So it's not coming out of left field at all - it's very much academic criticism and response to Amos. Can you explain why that doesn't belong in our article? The following is the text that was removed: "S. Alexander Reed has written about the intertextual relationships between Gaiman and Amos's work. This needs to be worked into the article with context, it cannot be merely dropped in right after the initial mention of Neil Gaiman, as it disrupts the flow of the article that we've been working to create for the past year or so. I would have to agree with those who supported its removal. It's an interesting bit and yes, it's sourced and peer-reviewed but it doesn't really fit into the article as it stands. I think it would be more appropriate as an external link or a mention in other sections. My problem is that I really struggle to see how removing peer reviewed scholarship increases the quality of an article. I, at least, would be hard-pressed to think that the coverage of any topic is diminished by the addition of academic criticism. Perhaps the section should be tagged as needing expansion, and when it mushrooms a bit more an "academic criticism of Tori Amos" sub-article could be justified. The second article, unfortunately, seems to fall under the same curse as the first: it's not noteworthy. This article is supposed to be an encyclopedia entry about Tori Amos, and so anything which will spell out who she is and why she is significant is useful, but that shouldn't include every single blog entry every fan has ever made about her. The articles suggested so far pretty much fall under that category (and I say this as an academic, with peer reviewed articles out there in the world myself. The use of jargon in even these brief precis' doesn't help, but even if the authors' theses were paraphrased in common language, there simply isn't enough reason to include them. A wikipedia article isn't supposed to be an exhaustive entry of every statement made on a significant figure by anyone, ever. Just the important stuff. I think that you are a bit too married to your article and your field of work to make a truly impartial decision. It's not my article, for one thing, nor is it closely in my field. But I point out, I've added a second article. There are far more to be added - if I had access to an academic library instead of having to do this via Google Scholar and my University VPN, I could find far more. Misplaced Pages is not paper. But as it stands, it does not seem to me to be overwhelming the article, and I am hard-pressed to say that the academic sources are not significant viewpoints. I am not so hard pressed. If you don't think academia can devolve into fancruft (albeit fancruft with a lot of long-winded and unnecessary jargon) then you haven't spent enough time at the Popular Culture Association conference. Again, the purpose of informing people what, in brief, a subject is about is seriously harmed by the inclusion of too much material. The acid-test for inclusion is: is this significant to an understanding of the subject. In the case of both the articles you've proposed here, the answer is no. The academics in question are, I'm certain, nice, productive people. But they are not notable, and neither are their opinions, which, when you look closely at them, devolve into subjective interpretation anyway. The content of the first article has already been summarized, as noted earlier - all it says, effectively, is that Gaiman and Amos borrow from one another. The article has therefore been reduced to a footnote to that effect, where that statement was already made in the article with reference to primary materials. The second article you included merely states that Amos covers others' songs in an emotional manner. The first claim is already documented in the article, and the second a subjective, unproveable assertion from some non-notable academics. To my mind, the major issue here is WP:NPOV, which states that we must represent "fairly, and as far as possible without bias, all significant views that have been published by reliable sources." To my mind, there are two major issues here.

1) Academic criticism, by definition, is reliable - indeed, WP:RS positions peer-reviewed sources as the very best sources available. 2) The process of peer review is expressly designed to identify accurate and important scholarship. Thus the peer review process is itself a voucher for significance as well.

"Significant" in WP:NPOV is not intended to be equivalent to notability, and thus the notability of the authors writing the articles is not significant to this - what is important is the peer review process. To misread significance as being about WP:N would be a mistake.

Now, as for the rest, I am open to better phrasings of the two paragraphs. But on the other hand, it is simply and ignorantly wrong to suggest, as 138.23.244.30 has, that the Reed article amounts to a statement that Amos and Gaiman are friends. Summary of academic writing does not mean stripping out the scholarship. And so while we should attempt to de-jargon the section, we should recognize that the article would not have been published in a peer-reviewed journal if it made such an obvious claim.

More broadly, look - we're an encyclopedia. Academic criticism needs to be part of what we do. There is no article that would not benefit from more academic criticism. Please moderate your tone. words like 'crass,' 'stupid,' and 'ignorant' tend to make people irksome, and do not help your case, particularly since one of the initial charges was that you are too personally tied to this section to remain objective. 2.) That academic criticism is, "by definition," reliable is, I think, a very questionable statement. But even if we set it aside, and assume that all peer-reviewed academic articles are accurate, that would not necessarily make them worth collating into this venue. The fact remains that the essays in question do not contribute to an understanding of the subject, and violate WP:NOT(2.9): "Misplaced Pages is not an indiscriminate collection of information." My note of the authors' non-notability is to accommodate the fact that if, say, Harold Bloom or Camille Paglia had chimed in with their opinions on the topic, they might well have deserved inclusion strictly on the basis of their own notoriety. And there comes a point where you want to start collapsing things. I mean, once you get to a certain volume, essays and books can be taken together. Should we find another piece on Amos's covers, or on Amos and intertextuality, I would support merging them into existing paragraphs, as they amount to the same perspective.
But on the other hand, I continue to find the assertion that peer-reviewed academic research (which WP:RS identifies as the most reliable of sources) does not contribute to an understanding of the subject to be crassly anti-intellectual. The most relevant policy, incidentally, is WP:RS. I quote two key aspects: "Academic and peer-reviewed publications are usually the most reliable sources when available." And "Misplaced Pages articles should cover all significant views, doing so in proportion to their published prominence among the most reliable sources." These two sentences, taken together, seem to me to make it clear that academic viewpoints should, when available, be strongly represented in articles. The most reliable sources are peer-reviewed academic sources. The views most prominent among the most reliable sources should guide the article. Taken at face value, really this means we should start gutting the rest of the article to build it from the academic sources. This is, of course, probably not preferable, however I think prominent and thorough coverage of academic sources is an absolute must under our policy. If you read my post, you would have realized that my comments on the grammar and the like were merely a side note. You also would have realized that that wasn't the reason I propose for moving the academic criticism elsewhere. My reason is that as it stands, the section doesn't seem to fit the scope of the article. If perhaps it was rewritten to be woven into the article, then it would work, and if perhaps there was a significant amount of material, it would warrant its own article. As for fixing the grammar and typos, I would think that the person (or people) who are defending the section in question would want to fix it and polish it up to the best of their abilities so as to increase the chances of its inclusion in the article. Seriously, why would I, as someone who currently doesn't agree with keeping the section in the article, want to correct it and polish it up?
I'm not saying that under no circumstances can academic criticism be part of the article, my argument is that as is (which has been a few months now without any significant change) the section is abrupt in the flow of the article and the content is poorly constructed. Because that's not how we work on Misplaced Pages. We don't just remove relevant stuff because it's not neatly placed within the article; we work with it, rewriting if necessary, editing, moving it to flow better, etc. Sometimes we move content to another article if it's really a better fit there, yes.
I'm concerned that you think the material "doesn't seem to fit the scope of the article". What is the scope of the article and why doesn't it fit? It feels perhaps to me that you've defined the scope of the article as purely including the aspects that it did before the addition of this section; in other words it considered Tori Amos as a biographical subject, a popular culture subject, and as a musical subject. It did not contain any reference to academic study of her work in a literary or media criticism/theory sense, no, but I don't see that as defining that it should not. That seems reasonable, until you take into account the number of angles in the world. This article in particular has been pared down numerous times as fans of this or that trope or perspective tried to cram it full of every tiny scrap of information or even supposition about its subject. A section on Ms. Amos' favorite foods? Another discussing her religion? How about three more detailing her economic philosophy, a listing of every instrument she has endorsed and their relative merits, and various satires or mentions in the pages of online comic books? You see the problem: soon you have not an encyclopedia entry, but a database of its own. It's why there exist requirements that a subject both be notable, and that the information about that subject be limited from simply being a random collection of factoids. Yes, scholarship in the arts is not primarily "opinion", but analysis based on study of the primary sources, and informed comparisons, the same fundamental approach used on all other subjects. To the extent that the work is of aesthetic or intellectual interest, the more valid approaches there will be. Sometimes it will be aesthetic opinion, but why is that invalid? So is the opinion of popular critics. if there is "consumer- level" criticism it should be included as well. Academic journals in the humanities are not generally in the business of restating already known information from primary sources. Which suggests to me that either you do not understand the articles, or you simply dislike the articles and believe Misplaced Pages should substitute your judgment for the judgment of the peer reviewed journals. After all, "academic criticism" is a broad subject and within the 2 paragraphs, Amos' relationship with Gaiman is discussed, followed by analysis of Amos' renditions of a few cover songs. (See what I mean?) Well, as I've said, I've got citations that I'll follow up on in a month or so when I have access to an academic library again that will get a few more articles. Past that, it'll be a matter of how it takes shape - there is a fair amount of academic criticism on Tori Amos, but I've not attempted an exhaustive bibliography, nor is it something I have the time to do. But as the section grows, its shape will be clearer - right now it's embryonic, to my mind, because it's based on two sources. But imperfection is OK. The academy seems to have spoken quite clearly on this: these articles are junk. That you seem to think all articles published in peer-reviewed resources are equally valid does not speak well of your critical skills. That the fact that you are the source of one of the articles does not speak well for either your scholarship or your professional ethics. Neither does your fairly obvious off-Misplaced Pages canvassing of votes from members of the arbitration committee who suddenly showed up to chime in on a topic which none of them have any history of having noticed before. You are doing a disservice to the project when you make such errors, and it is for such reasons that Misplaced Pages is a bad joke in academic circles. At least you were honest when you noted "you're not going to persuade me." I suppose I should have taken the hint from your unapologetically aggressive use of insult. A final note, since you're going to simply do whatever you like anyway: from someone who has been on both sides of hiring committees, you might be interested to know that although we're technically not supposed to, about the very first thing we ever do is Google a candidate. Citation indexes are relatively less useful in the humanities, as compared to citation other fields, because in most fields the rate of citation is very low. For one thing, AHCI measures only the citations in other articles from among the very limited range of journals included in AHCI, not citations in books. More fundamentally, in the humanities there are typically relatively few people working on any one particular topic, as compared with the sciences, where certain topics attract very wide attention. There are a great many artists in this genre; there is only one human genome. The lack of citations here only indicates the relatively small number of workers, and the dispersal of their topics of interest, not necessarily the importance of their work. Keep & Keep: It seems fitting that peer review of aesthetic material is itself aesthetic. Keep both paragraphs and expand if possible.

It seems less fitting that peer review of an editor's work on WP be also aesthetically based. Now that's something I do know about. Operative words:

  • Pisceandreams: 'disrupts the flow'
  • Samuel Grant: 'doesn't really fit', 'unwarranted' ' 'redundant. Their (Gaiman's and Amos') relationship is already discussed elsewhere'
  • 138.23: 'not noteworthy' 'use of jargon'

All subjective. There is only enough substantive argument here to hold between my thumb and forefinger and not have two between my thumb and forefinger (ie, 'relationship is discussed elsewhere', which proved to be misleading, as the article says something completely different about their relationship than the one line above.

  • Phil Sandifer: "Peer-reviewed academic criticism". Somewhat more substantial. No, I don't think I can get away with understatement here, hostile crowd. Much more substantial. Just today, I have noticed something: subjective arguments use adjectives. Substantial arguments use nouns. Kind of sounds like a truism now that I say it.

Rebroad served the role of critic, which as you can probably tell I find a noble occupation. Unlike me he is sensible enough to stay off of one side or the other. Cute, but also utterly wrong. "peer-reviewed" is ALSO an adjective, as is "academic." That you don't recognize them as such tells us all we needed to know about your assessment of the arguments here: you haven't made any. Not all criticism is created equally, and to pretend that an honest evaluation of its merits is beside the point betrays a complete lack of understanding of what "peer-reviewed" actually means. As has been pointed out, the so-called "peer-reviewed academic criticism," in this case, fails all such evaluative measures. The academic quality of this "scholarship" is nil. While DGG tries, manfully, to shoot the messenger above, the citation indices remain the only objective measure of a work's academic importance. Jerome McGann's work crops up hundreds of times. The entire journal which forms the core of the supposed 'academic criticism' section here merits precisely zero. It's junk criticism. And as for "peer reviewed," the "peer" in this case isn't: he's an ABD graduate student transparently - and vainly - trying to pad his resume by putting his own references on a website.

At least you and DGG aren't bothering to dispute the more serious issue here: the strictly counter-policy canvassing which Mr. Sanders engaged in to try to stack the deck here. It's all moot: he's already shot himself in the foot fatally as far as his academic aspirations go. When reading this article on Tori Amos, everything seemed very homogenous and flowed well, until I read the "academic criticism" section. I was then suprised to find more discussion about two paragraphs than everything else in the article. I think it seems that the people who have a problem with it, like me, just read the sentences and have a feeling that they just don't fit. And Phil, being an editor of the magazine, is fighting like heck to substantiate his additions as worthy of this Misplaced Pages article.

Now, the previous paragraph I just wrote has no evidence related to Misplaced Pages policy, that was more of a discussion of why I am here, being slightly objective to the discussion. Now, I understand that ImageText states that its articles are peer-reviewed, but I have a problem with reading an academic article about Music Theory in a journal that states, "The objective of ImageTexT is to advance the academic study of comic books, comic strips, and animated cartoons," which makes this article seem totally out of place in an "interdisciplinary comics studies" journal. I know Phil is going to go to the mattresses on this one, but can we truly trust this journal and its supposed peer-reviewed process? I might find this article more applicable if published in a music theory journal. The second article, of course, is from the "society for music theory", so that article obviously is not debateable as academically sound in this context.

Going back to the academic criticism section itself, I still argue, and continue the argument, that it does belong in this article. As an example, this is a biography article, and this section is highly technical to the music theory field. It would be like taking an article about Albert Einstein and spending a section devoted to the technical aspects about his theory of relativity, citing physics formulas and theories that a reader of a biography won't understand or relate to. That kind of technical article belongs in the Theory of Relativity article. Now, 99% of people reading a biography of Tori Amos will not know what "intertexual relationships" or "Jacques Lacan's idea of the mirror stage" means, so that type of discussion doesn't belong here.

As for Burns and Woods study of cover songs, I fail to see where two academics' interpretation of the way Tori Amos constructed the music for two songs she covered should be included. I don't see it as criticism; I see it as interpretations of solely two songs, and not of her body of work. There are literally millions of songs by thousands of artists. Does that mean every article should have a paragraph or section dedicated to someone's interpretation of some or all of the songs? Just because there are some acaedmic articles about artists does not mean that the content belongs on Misplaced Pages.

I do believe that academic criticism can be placed in an article, but should only refer to the artists' work as a whole, and be from journals of music theory, not Comics Studies journals. Based on this, this section as it exists should be removed, and only be replaced by criticism that applies the motifs and/or themes of Tori Amos's work as a whole. On the general question "is academic criticism appropriate for an article" I'm sure that the answer "it depends" will prove unsatisfactory to the proponents for inclusion whom, if I read their arguments correctly, believe it should be "yes no matter what." The text in question was (is) woefully out of step with the article. The source, while ostensibly peer-reviewed (clarification inserted later: this was in refernce to the internal peer review of the source's appropiateness, not it's status as a source. misundertandings like this can be avoided if calm prevails, instead of flaring up, ay?) , is clearly minor. The material covered, in the broad context of the artist's career, is diminishingly small. The size (and bad prose) of the included material means that "editorial judgment" alone argues for its removal. There is also the question of the appropriateness of the off-wiki canvassing to solicit support for a source he is perhaps too close to (see "Editor's Introduction - Philip Sandifer") for objectivity. Though I will say, regarding the Burns/Woods article, I'm not sure how attention to the only view of a subject is undue weight. If there are views that are being ignored, then yes, that would seem like undue weight. Are you suggesting that there are sources to be added? But as for anything related to the Reed citation, given both your personal attack and your blatant lie about canvassing, frankly, no.   • Use of terms like "personal attack" are unesacarily escalatory. I simply suggested that spruiking a magazine you are an editor for is a bad idea: You're too close to it to be objective. Even if you're not, as an admistrator and an acedimic, you should know better.
  • It is not appropiate to cry poor to the mailing list. While of course I assume good faith in your doing so and that you could not even have imagined that it would attract like minded individuals to come here and support your view, that's what happened.
With respect to the actual article:
  • If the review/analysis in question is the only view of the subject, it's textbook undue weight.
  • Please use the same process we expect of all other editors: Compromise, mutual respect, and editing.
  • Blind reversion, bullying (in my opinon) and rudeness are not substitutes for editing.

  • With much respects, a number of editors are making the same observations: That the material was dropped in as whole cloth, and that you're too close to the source to be objective, and that you're blindly reverting any changes to the material.
  • That was circa 10 December.
  • Your post to the mailing list was 11 December.
  • Again, while it beggers beleif that it did not occur to you that the mailing list (a very narrow set of editors most of whom have very similar opinons) would drum up assymetrical supprt, I must assume good faith.
Moving to the more immediate past,the request for comment was again a pseduo-peer review.

I still believe that Phil is too biased, and references to the Neil Gaiman/Tori Amos article should be removed. I find it suspect that the article is published in a comic studies journal when the author is a music theorist. I know that Gaiman's work is in the realm of comics, but when the author's speciality is music theory, the article should only be notable if it is published in a music theory journal. There are limits to what I can say to address this, since peer review is an anonymous and confidential process. However, it should be noted that ImageTexT, although published out of an English department, is explicitly an interdisciplinary journal. In a case where an article is being published that comes from a disciplinary perspective outside of that of the editors of a journal, part of responsible editorship is making sure that the article is checked on all fronts. However, it should be noted, Reed's piece is not strictly speaking a music theory or a comics piece. It's an interdisciplinary study. It came out in an interdisciplinary journal. And it's being used to make interdisciplinary claims. I am troubled by the implications of your field limitation approach, simply because it seems to me to render the whole of interdisciplinary work suspect for Misplaced Pages even when it has gone through normal and appropriate standards of peer review. I'm finding it very hard to see consensus for this material, so I'm trying to distill the relevant diffs. Oh, "what's the point" is an obvious question, right? Well, my initial impression was that there was never consesus that this material needed to be added, and that there had been multiple full reverts by a single editor to keep the material in. I do see now that the IP was reverted by Scarian, but I'm not seeing any edits by Scarian to talk at all. Per the discussion above, several editors have expressed that (for a variety of reasons) that they do not believe that this material belongs in the article. I repeat Samuel Grant's request that you stop reverting and allow discussion to occur. You've come right up to the three-revert rule while edit warring to keep this material in. Repeatedly, over an extended period of time. Please remove this material until such a time as there is consensus for its inclusion.

In musician articles, we typically create "Musical style" sections, which include commentary. See R.E.M. and Janet Jackson for example. You could easily refashion an "academic criticism" section into this. WesleyDodds (talk) 00:59, 2 February 2009 (UTC)

I think brenneman still has a point. Earlier in the discussion, Phil promised more sources and material than just the two articles we have here, saying that he would provide more starting in 2009. Now, a month later, we have no new academic articles regarding Tori Amos, but Phil still wants these two articles included alone. Again, just because academic criticism exists doesn't mean its useful. Here is an analogy: if there was an article comparing Beyonce Knowles' music and J.D. Salinger's writings, would that be included in the article about Salinger? No, because there are tons of other academic articles about him, and that wouldn't be necessary. Including every academic article would be a literary review. Misplaced Pages isn't a literary review. Just because these are the only academic articles we have about Tori Amos does not make them the best or applicable. We need more, and better, articles.   • L Burns - Expression in Pop-Rock Music: a Collection of Critical and... (Google Scholar is cutting off the title - has an essay n Amos though)
  • looks promising, particularly for a bit more on the Burns/Woods piece.
  • Joseph Henry Auner, Judith Irene Lochhead: Postmodern Music/Postmodern Thought: Seems to deal briefly but substantively with Amos on page 327.

I found a WP guideline that seems pretty straightforward about this section, from WP:PSTS: "Misplaced Pages articles should rely mainly on published reliable secondary sources and, to a lesser extent, on tertiary sources. All interpretive claims, analyses, or synthetic claims about primary sources must be referenced to a secondary source, rather than original analysis of the primary-source material by Misplaced Pages editors." Well, no one has argued against deleting the section, so if I don't hear anything soon, I will be taking out "Academic Criticism." If someone wants to find better sources, feel free, but with only primary sources, this section needs to be removed. We can describe the contents of a source. We do not need to wait for a secondary source on a topic to be summarized in yet another secondary source before we can use it. Regardless of your belief that such a policy would be 'stupid,' its principle remains valid. In order to include material in Misplaced Pages, it must serve the purpose of the article, i.e., to provide unbiassed understanding of a subject's importance or impact. Even if one were to grant the need for a separate 'academic criticism' section - which I don't, and which, in general, does not appear on most subject pages -- one would need to establish criteria for their inclusion. Including every single interpretive article on, say, the Rime of the Ancient Mariner (much less STC in entirety) would make the article some tens of thousands of pages long. I am not against academia, in its place, and well handled. In this case it is neither well-handled, nor placed properly. The argument remains: since one can not include every single academic reference to a subject, the inclusion of such references has to be when they are significant contributions to the topic, or notable in their own right. I haven't said these sources aren't good enough for inclusion. I've said there's more to write about it. I've provided, in the section above, several sources to look at. This is not, however, bad information - it is merely incomplete information. There is nothing *wrong* with either of the sources used. The problem is that there is other information to be added, and possibly synthesis and summary of the information once it's all in, should multiple articles on similar topics be found. The situation would be analogous to us only covering Little Earthquakes and From the Choirgirl hotel in detail. Yes, there are nine more albums that need to be dealt with. But the article is not improved by cutting out the information we have. There are not better sources than the peer-reviewed scholarship we have. There is, however, more of it to find. I gave several examples. Anyone interested in improving the section further (I do not think it has any egregious problems, although, like any section of any article, there is room for improvement) should follow up on those sources. Again, the COI policy suggests that "Using material you yourself have written or published is allowed within reason, but only if it is notable" (emphasis mine). The concern is a valid one: inclusion of external sources, in their own section (rather than as cited references) only makes sense if the publications *themselves* are notable. These are definitely not, and nobody, not even Phil, has tried suggesting they were. Certainly the journals pass WP:N. It's also a bit of a stretch to say that I wrote or published either article. I had involvement only in the ImageTexT article, and there I was the issue editor only - I did not write it, and the end decision to publish was not made by me but by the journal's editors and, more broadly, by the University of Florida's English Department. So we have here two articles, one of which I had nothing to do with, and the other one of which I neither wrote nor published, both of which were published in notable journals under stringent editorial provisions. The journals do not seem to pass WP:N. There is no mention of any citation of ImageText in any citation index. Reed's article was published by an organ of the University at which he teaches...hardly a glowing testimony to its objective value. Just so, while the MTO journal might, arguably, be considered worthy of a footnote somewhere, the article cited here does not merit an entire paragraph. I'd have to see what the 50 peer-reviewed articles say. Articles with similar topics - whether it be similar approaches or similar subjects (i.e. multiple articles on Under the Pink) can likely be grouped and summarized. Eventually, for something with sufficient academic coverage, a spin-out article such as Academic coverage of Tori Amos could prove preferable. But it is difficult to describe in any detail how to write a section on 50 sources when I have only read two of the 50, and do not even know what the other 48 are. What I am trying to get at is that if we include every journal article about Tori Amos, why stop there? Why not do it for every topic on WP that has journal articles written about it? Basically Misplaced Pages would just become a huge dumping ground of academic articles. It would literally be an academic review. And as Misplaced Pages says in WP:IINFO: Misplaced Pages is not an indiscriminate collection of information. "...merely being true, or even verifiable, does not automatically make something suitable for inclusion in the encyclopedia." I think, to some extent, this issue starts to scale with volume of academic coverage. Certainly something that has a huge amount of academic writing on it needs to be more selective. On the other hand, a topic that is the subject of a few articles can probably summarize those articles. To my mind, the issue is several-fold. First of all, encyclopedic coverage ought to include an overview of academic views of the topic, because academic views are significant views in terms of the knowledge about a subject. If a subject is covered by peer-reviewed, notable journals, that coverage matters simply because, well, academic viewpoints have an inherent weight to them. From there it becomes a matter of writing a good academic criticism section. I agree that the one here needs work. I've pointed to sources that people can use to perform that work. It doesn't, particularly when for half of the material here "peer reviewed" actually means "Phil Sandifer reviewed." Much "peer reviewed" scholarship falls well below the notability guidelines here, and in the world at large. You are also repeating your preconception that "academic viewpoints have an inherent weight." The statement is simply untrue. Does peer-reviewed academia automatically have notability and merit inclusion in articles?

I believe that peer-reviewed academia, like all other topics and content on Misplaced Pages, need to be filtered by notability. Just because journal articles receive peer-reviewing does not make their content worthy of inclusion into Misplaced Pages articles. Some academia is only applicable to the narrow field it is in. I think we are giving too much weight to articles that do not deserve the attention here. This seems to me to subject academia to stricter scrutiny than other sources. We are not nearly so worried about the degree of notability of individual reviews of an album, for instance. What is significant is that the article appears in a notable, peer reviewed venue More broadly, I think that academic criticism matters and is worth discussing. We should pick the most notable academic articles that we can find, but fundamentally "academic attention" to a subject, broadly construed, is a notable viewpoint. Furthermore, WP:N as such explicitly does *not* limit article content, so I'm not sure where the argument here is coming from. The phrasing that is most relevant is WP:NPOV: "Neutrality requires that the article should fairly represent all significant viewpoints that have been published by a reliable source, and should do so in proportion to the prominence of each." The question is whether academic viewpoints are significant and prominent. And I would suggest that both of these *are* accomplished by dint of the peer review system. WP:NPOV also states in WP:DUE: "Just as giving undue weight to a viewpoint is not neutral, so is giving undue weight to other verifiable and sourced statements. Thus, not every verifiable source needs to be included. And while WP:N does not limit article content, WP:IINFO states "merely being true, or even verifiable, does not automatically make something suitable for inclusion in the encyclopedia." The guidelines seem to hold the peer-reviewed articles to the same standard as any reliable source: they need to be notable and worthy of inclusion. Well, but none of those things take us to WP:N - in fact, NPOV does not use the word "notable" at all, which I do not think is accidental. We're not using the standard of WP:N where something has to be covered in multiple sources for article inclusion. That is why WP:N says, explicitly, that "The notability guidelines determine whether a topic is notable enough to be a separate article in Misplaced Pages. They do not give guidance on the content of articles."
Except in the case of COI, where notability, in its own right, *is* the standard for inclusion. The policy reads that material you have personally been involved with "is allowed within reason, but only if it is notable." That suggests strongly that the threshold for inclusion is one which asks whether a general audience - one not involved in editing, publishing, or writing the material in question - would have considered the scholarship worthy of inclusion in its own right. There is no way to answer that question, in this case, since Mr. Sandifer both violated that policy with his initial additions, and then violated it again by off-Wiki canvassing for support when he was called on the topic (see above discussion). What can be done is to recognize that the policy's rationale applies here: unless the academic perspective is, itself, notable (an essay by Camille Paglia, for example, or some other individually notable scholar or venue) it has no place in the article...certainly not foregrounded in its own section, as though it were part-and-parcel of the article's subject. 138.23.246.0 (talk) 16:49, 13 April 2009 (UTC)

I came here to comment on the RFC. Misplaced Pages articles should generally include peer-reviewed scholarship about artists when that scholarship exists. If there is too much scholarship to include it all, then we can worry about which parts to include. If there is not much scholarship (just one or two papers), we can summarize it all. Our goal is not merely to give a biography and a list of artistic works; we should be trying to cover all aspects of the artist, including critical and academic reception when these can be sourced.

In this specific case, the journals in question seem to have academic editorial boards (, ). It would require some strong sort of evidence to explain why these are not actually reliable sources for the information they present. I am saying that an article about an artist should cover all the aspects of that artist, including biographical information, lists of works, and criticism including critical reception of works and academic criticism of works when this can be sourced. In some cases the criticism can be put on pages related to the individual works, as with Guernica, but I think the criticism being discussed for this article discusses Amos' in a wider sense, rather than just an individual work. I am not making any general statement about every reliable source or about articles that are not about artists. The question as stated is easy to answer: no. The mere fact that a perspective has been considered 'interesting' or 'worth publishing' by a specific cadre of a specific editorial board for a specific journal on a specific topic does not make it, de facto, 'notable' in the sense that the term is used here on Misplaced Pages (i.e., useful to a general audience). Inclusion of scholarship on a topic is justified, when it is relevant to the general topics of the article itself. However, when the academic perspective veers sharply from the material of the article (as, for instance, when the academic work focuses on a specific reading of a few selected texts) I think it is much harder to argue that it merits inclusion. I think that broadly lumping all academic scholarship into one topic is dangerous. I think that the scholarship should focus on Amos' work as a whole, not for instance on two cover songs. It's like focusing on one short story of John Steinbeck and ignoring his whole body of work. The only articles that should be included here should be about her whole work, otherwise the picking and choosing of which articles on which songs/albums could be considered Original Synthesis. And again, the summaries should be in direct proportion to the weight of the article. So no paragraphs about articles that have no academic citations outside of Misplaced Pages. I feel every topic that has substantial academic perspectives on it should summarize those perspectives. For a topic that is the subject of massive volumes of analysis - Pride and Prejudice say - obviously that's not going to involve attention to every single article, because there's such a massive body of academic work that any given article is not a significant portion of the critical consensus. By "substantial" I mean in terms of the substance of the analysis of the articles - that is, non-trivial coverage in the article, as opposed to off-handed mention. I am inclined to think that either of the articles provides a substantial perspective. Are they the best place to start? I don't know. They were the place I knew to start, and the place I could start with the resources I had immediately available. The section can be better, but it is a start. Certainly I think the articles provide a useful route in. I would be surprised if no coverage of either exists in the Platonic Ideal of an academic criticism section for Tori Amos - the Reed one seems to me to offer a unique perspective on a much-noted aspect of Amos's work, and the other one is by an author with multiple publications on Amos, and is thus a sizable portion of the body of academic work on Amos.

to go back the question at the head of the sentence, peer-reviewed does not necessarily equal notability, but the sources for a topic do not have to be notable; they merely have to meet the requirement for Reliable sources, which, in many fields, accepts a very wide range of academic work. For controversial material, it's a different sort of consideration, because some sources are more reliable and authoritative than others, and we use the best. For addition of pertinent information that wouldn't otherwise be there, any RS would do. Notability refers to the subject of an article, not to the content, and not to the sources. The academic criticism is pretentious and stupid

I noticed after removing the Academic Criticism section that there's been an enormous, pointlessly frustrating discussion about it already. Well, I'm sure the section will be back faster than I can blink, but I'd just like to say that arguing over Misplaced Pages criteria will not get you anywhere with regards to this section. The real criteria for why it shouldn't be published is that it's stupid and it's bad writing and it's pretentious and it sucks. If someone made a section on every entertainer with writings only from Entertainment Weekly and TV Guide, you would see the point. Nobody comes here to read this kind of god-awful drek. Keep criticism to a minimum in these articles... why? Because 99% OF ALL CRITICS ARE TERRIBLE WRITERS AND NOBODY LIKES THEIR BULLSHIT FOR MUCH OF ANYTHING EXCEPT "BUY THIS/DON'T BUY THIS". Agreed. Criticism of works that warrant it are usually nice to include in an article, as they can help provide context for the article in a larger realm. Also, don't forget 67.169.60.6 that criticism can be both positive and negative, so ideally it can always be neutral. Relationship with Universal Republic Records

It seems that there is some disagreement on Amos's exact relationship with Universal Republic Records. Then I'd like to direct you to Universal, not The Bridge, handing the promotion, not to mention Tori's working on her Solstice album at Doug Morris' request. In the two references I have provided, as well as the link you provide, no where does Tori state she is licensing her music to Universal for distribution. Here she states that it's a joint venture where she explicitly has to financially contribute to her projects in exchange for full creative control; there's nothing about merely licensing her music for distribution. Here her statement further cements the suggestion that her contract is a modified version of an old-fashioned contract except with the exchange of financial contribution on her end in exchange for more control in the deal. Yes, Tori doesn't have a 360 deal, but she's NEVER had a 360 deal. No where does it state "distribution deal" or "licensed for distribution"; she states "joint venture". All signs point to Tori still being a musician under Universal Republic Records but with more control, and not a musician licensing her music to Universal Republic Records for distribution. Citizenship sources, does Misplaced Pages Assume if no sources can be found?

Should Misplaced Pages default to stating that a person is a citizen of the country that person was born in or what if a person lives outside their birth country for most of the year? What should be done if no specific sources regarding citizenship can be found? Assume birth country? Is it possible Tori Amos is an ex-patriot? Article (and sub-articles) cleanup needed

A certain editor has failed to comply with the notice at the top of this talkpage and a lot of the Tori-related articles are overloaded with fluff words and sounds frighteningly like a fan page (at least from my perspective). The UR subsection is as long as the Epic subsection, and there's considerably less that's gone on during the UR period of time than the Epic period of time, for instance (are those long quotes really necessary?). I don't know if it's just me that feels this way (on here, at least, some people on Yessaid have noticed how a lot of the articles have been edited in a very un-NPOV way), but I just wanted to throw this out into the open. Survivor/Victim

Someone changed the phrasing of the article to say that Tori Amos was a victim of sexual assault, not a survivor. I'm going to change it back, for the following reasons:

  • The source cited describes Amos as a survivor.
  • Amos and the group RAINN, which she co-founded and which is recognized as a reliable source for sexual assault information, both use the term "survivor" over "victim."
  • The edit summary described the term "survivor" as an "exaggeration." While I would personally argue that it is almost never an exaggeration, it certainly isn't in Amos's case. She has stated that the man who assaulted her also intended to kill her, which means that she is a survivor even in the strictest sense.
