Östgöta kavalleriregemente (Ostrogothia Cavalry Regiment) was a Swedish Army cavalry regiment located in the province of Östergötland that traced its origins back to the 16th Century. It was reorganized into an infantry regiment in 1791.

History

The regiment has its origins in fanor raised in the 1550s. In 1619, these smaller units where organized into Östergötlands storregemente, and in 1623, this grand regiment was spilt into three regiments, one of those being Östgöta kavalleriregemente. The regiment's soldiers were conscripted from the province of Östergötland. It was one of the original 8 Swedish cavalry regiments mentioned in the Swedish constitution of 1634.

The regiment was officially raised in 1636 although it had existed since the 1620s. The regiment's first commander was Hans Rotkirch. Östgöta kavalleriregemente was alloted in 1687. It was merged with Östgöta infanteriregemente in 1791 to form Livgrenadjärregementet. The unit was renamed to Livgrenadjärregementets Rusthållsdivision and had some sort of semi-independence.
