Future projects

Tecmo has announced future Dead or Alive games including Dead or Alive Extreme Beach Volleyball 2 and Dead or Alive: Code Chronos.

A feature film, DOA: Dead or Alive, directed by Corey Yuen and starring Devon Aoki, Kevin Nash and Jaime Pressly is also scheduled for release in 2006.

Criticism

Many DOA fans are critical with Tecmo's marketing of the series. The proliferation of DOA intellectual property, especially in advertising, is considered by them as a sell out on Tecmo's part. The announcement of the DOA film was met with much derision among this group of fans. Some also express displeasure with the barrage of game reissues, such as DOA: Ultimate. These are viewed as attempts to shortchange loyal fans by charging them substantial sums for trivial amounts of new content.

Controversy also surrounds the series' tendency to present female characters as skimpily clothed dolls with exaggerated breasts, viewed by many as a blatant example of the sexual objectification of women. Dead or Alive Extreme Beach Volleyball might have proved this from a standpoint. Dead or Alive creator Tomonobu Itagaki is also a frequent target of criticism.

Fans of "old school" fighting games, such as the Street Fighter, King of Fighters, and Virtua Fighter series, tend to disregard the series as excessively simple, lacking in technique and depth.
