I Am… Sasha Fierce is the third studio album by American R&B and pop singer Beyoncé Knowles, released November 8, 2008 on Columbia Records. The double album introduces her alter-ego "Sasha Fierce". I Am... Sasha Fierce was also released as a deluxe edition, and later an accompanying remix album with videography, a platinum edition, and a re-release to celebrate one year since the album's first release.

The album debuted at number one on the U.S. Billboard 200 chart, selling 482,000 copies in its first week. It was an international commercial success, earning multi-platinum sales certifications in several countries and producing five worldwide hit singles. Upon its release, I Am... Sasha Fierce received generally mixed to positive reviews from most music critics and earned Knowles five Grammy Awards at the 52nd Grammy Awards. To date, the album has sold over six million copies worldwide.

Background

Knowles revealed that she had co-written and co-produced some of the seventy songs she had recorded in over eight months. In a statement released on Knowles' official website, she wrote:

I am in a different place right now and I wanted people to see the many sides of me. The music is upbeat for the dance, fun side and it is reflective, passionate and serious for the personal side. I have taken risks here. I am not afraid and my music will explain it all. There is no label or tag on my sound. It's me and I am so excited to share it with the world on November 18.

— Beyoncé Knowles

The album formally introduces Knowles' alter-ego Sasha Fierce. Knowles said that Sasha was "born" during the making of her 2003 hit single "Crazy in Love." In an interview with Entertainment Weekly magazine, Knowles noted that her alter-ego is "strictly for the stage." The magazine has described it as "the singer's sensual, aggressive alter ego." Sasha Fierce first appeared in the video for "Single Ladies (Put a Ring on It)" with her signature "Roboglove." Knowles later wore it on the red carpet during the 2008 MTV Europe Music Awards, when she performed on Saturday Night Live, as well as on the cover of Gotham magazine. Knowles' father-manager, Mathew, explained the two-disc album, saying, "Beyoncé was adamant—and she has complete creative control—about dividing her songs. She felt she couldn't mix the songs together. She's in a much different space now than she was one year ago. She's married and in a really good place and this album reflects that."

Music

In a Billboard magazine interview, Knowles described the two sides of the album: "... One side has songs that are more mainstream and another has my more traditional R&B songs for my fans who've been there the whole time. Some of it sounds like Barbra Streisand, Karen Carpenter and The Beatles around the 1970s." Knowles explained on The Oprah Winfrey Show that the difference between I Am... Sasha Fierce and Knowles' earlier solo albums is that it includes more ballads. The second disc, Sasha Fierce, contains consistent electro influences, which is displayed in songs like "Radio" and "Sweet Dreams."

Release and promotion

The Deluxe edition of the album, was released simultaneously with the Standard edition. Mathew Knowles held a listening party for the album in New York on October 22, 2008. Prior to the album's release date, the entire album was premiered on November 11, 2008 through Knowles' MySpace account. To correspond with the double album release, Columbia Records created a teaser website for Sasha Fierce.

Then on June 16, 2009, Above and Beyoncé: Video Collection & Dance Mixes was released. This CD/DVD release included dance remixes to the singles of the album (as well as the "Ego" remix with rapper Kanye West) and the videos previously released for these singles. Finally the Platinum edition of I Am... Sasha Fierce was released in select countries in November 2009, featuring a CD and DVD. The Deluxe edition of the album was re-issued in the United States on November 23, 2009 including all of the previously released songs plus new songs "Poison" and "Why Don't You Love Me," as well as the remix of "Video Phone" with Lady Gaga. An EP titled "I Am...Sasha Fierce - The Bonus Tracks" was released on November 23, 2009 in several countries featuring these new tracks.

Singles

  • "If I Were a Boy" peaked at number 3 on the Billboard Hot 100, having being certified 2x Platinum and selling over 2,000,000 units digitally. It topped 11 charts worldwide, mostly in Europe, and to-date Knowles' best-selling UK single.
  • "Diva" was released as the third single (only released in the US) debuting on the Hot 100, at 96, and peaked at 19, becoming Knowles' 12th Top 20 single. It was certified Gold by RIAA and sold nearly 1,000,000 units digitally.
  • "Halo" peaked at number five in the U.S. and was certificated as 2x Platinum selling over 2,000,000 units digitally. Internationally the song reached top 10 in twenty countries. On January 31, 2010, Knowles earned a Grammy Award for Best Female Pop Vocal Performance for the song.
  • "Ego" was shipped with a remix featuring Kanye West to US radio on May 19, 2009 and peaked at 39 on the Hot 100, becoming the fifth single from the album to peak in the top 40 on the chart. Ego also peaked at number three on the Billboard R&B/Hip-Hop. It was certified gold by RIAA and sold nearly 500,000 digital units.
  • "Sweet Dreams" replaced "Broken-Hearted Girl" as the sixth single from the album. The song peaked at number one in New Zealand, two in Australia, five in the UK and ten in the US. It was certified Platinum in the US for sales over 1,000,000 units.
  • "Video Phone" was sent to US radio in September 2009 and released for purchase as a CD Single on November 17, 2009. The video features the extended remix with additional vocals from Lady Gaga. It was also released in Greece, Italy and France on November 20, 2009 and the UK on December 14, 2009. It peaked at 37 on the Billboard R&B/Hip-Hop chart and the 65 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. "Video Phone" is the only single from "I Am... Sasha Fierce" that has received a physical domestic US release. Prior to "I Am... Sasha Fierce" Beyonce had released domestic CD singles for all her songs with the exception of "Work It Out".

Other charting songs

  • "Radio" was released in the Netherlands instead of "Broken-Hearted Girl", where it then debuted on the Dutch Top 40. It was also used in different Dutch television commercials to promote local radio stations.
  • "Smash into You" was included during the closing credits of the 2009 motion picture Obsessed, a film which the Knowles had a lead role. The song was originally recorded by Jon McLaughlin in the form of "Smack into You," but was purchased by Mathew Knowles. The-Dream and Beyoncé re-produced the song using different instruments, and she also decided to change "Smack" into "Smash" during the chorus and hook, thus crediting her as a main songwriter.
  • "Why Don't You Love Me," even though it was a bonus track on the album, managed to peak at number one on the U.S. Hot Dance Club Songs chart more than one year after the album's original release, making it her thirteenth number-one hit on that chart. A twelve track remix promo CD was also released featuring remixes from six notable remixers.

Tour

Main article: I Am… Tour

Knowles' I Am… Tour kicked off in Edmonton, Canada on March 26, 2009, in support of the album. The European leg of the tour started on April 26, 2009, in Zagreb, Croatia and ended on June 9, 2009, in London, England. On June 21, 2009, she began the third leg of the tour in the United States and finished in August with a 4-day stint at Encore Las Vegas on the Las Vegas Strip. Starting on September 15, 2009, the fourth leg began in Melbourne, Australia and finished on September 24 in Perth, Australia. Knowles then went on performing in Asia, the Middle East, Europe, Africa and the United Kingdom, before finishing the 2009 portion of the tour on November 24 in Belfast, Northern Ireland. The tour had its final leg in 2010, visiting Latin America. Starting on February 4, 2010, in Florianópolis Brazil, she visited five other places before finishing in Trinidad on February 18, 2010. It is estimated the tour grossed over $86 million in 93 concerts.

Commercial performance

I Am…Sasha Fierce first debuted at number five on Japan's Oricon international chart and subsequently moved to the top spot on the chart, becoming Knowles' third number one album in that country. The album debuted at number one on the U.S. Billboard 200, selling 482,000 units in its first week, giving Knowles her third consecutive number one album in the U.S.; and has so far received a 2x platinum certification by the RIAA. According to Billboard it was the tenth best selling album of 2008. As of January 2010, the album has sold more than 2,800,000 copies in the United States according to Nielsen SoundScan.

In the UK, the album debuted at number ten, becoming Knowles' lowest-debuting album despite having higher first week sales than her previous album B'Day. Following Knowles' performance at the 2008 The X Factor finale with winner Alexandra Burke, the album moved up to number nine. Due to the success of its singles in the UK and especially due to the release and success of "Sweet Dreams" in July, it rose from five to its highest peak of number two its 39th week on the chart (August 16). Eventually, it became the seventh best selling album of 2009 in UK, and sold more than 1,000,000 there. In Ireland, I Am... Sasha Fierce debuted at number three, making it Knowles second top three album in the country. After the success of the lead singles "If I Were A Boy" and "Single Ladies (Put a Ring on It)" and announcement of the tour the album went on to top the Irish charts giving Knowles her second Irish number one album.

In Australia, I Am... Sasha Fierce debuted at number nine and peaked at number eight however following the success of singles "Sweet Dreams" and "Broken-Hearted Girl" the album rebounded to a new peak of three in late September 2009. In New Zealand the album debuted at number sixteen before popularity of its singles, especially "Sweet Dreams", pushed the album up to a new peak of three. The album was certified Platinum after twenty-three weeks on the chart, shipping over 15,000 copies to retailers.

After the 52nd Grammy Awards ceremony, "I Am...Sasha Fierce" either remarkably ascended several album charts or re-entered others and set new peaks in countries such as Switzerland, Austria and Portugal. Worldwide sales stand at more than six million copies.

The album received generally mixed to positive reviews from most music critics, based on an aggregate score of 62/100 from Metacritic. Mariel Concepcion of Billboard magazine wrote, "Beyoncé devoted half of the tracks on this double-disc set to her feisty alter ego Sasha Fierce ... But, it's the classic, more timeless R&B songs on the portion of the album that seem like a much-welcomed stretch for the singer." Comparing the songs on the "Sasha Fierce" disc to B'Day, "less fun, less impulsive, and yes, less fierce", said Allmusic. Vibe magazine's Amy Linden pondered the album's double-sided personality, favoring Knowles over her alter-ego: "Ironically, it's the more tame (and nameless) persona that's the most intriguing, commanding and sexual. ... Beyoncé sounds relaxed, confident and, if for no other reason than the fact that you can't hear her trying, hits the mark. Maybe someone should let her therapist and label know that letting Sasha shine too bright dims Beyoncé's light".

Christian Hoard of Rolling Stone magazine noted the slow songs in the album as having "thoroughly memorable tunes", although he dismissed its lyrics, claiming they are "full of bland self-affirmation and saggy lines". However, Hoard commended Knowles for her presentation of her alter ego, writing "But the 'Sasha' disc boasts Beyoncé's most adventurous music yet ... Another plus: The girl who blew up going all melismatic has never sung with more restraint than she does on Sasha." Leah Greenblatt of Entertainment Weekly gave the album a B+ rating and said the album offers "two compelling sides" of Knowles, describing the first disc as "romantic, vulnerable, soft" and the other as "aggressive, sexual, and, well, fierce". She adds, "The collection might have been better served had she edited it down to one disc, rather than belabor what ultimately seems like a marketing gimmick. And while fans will surely speculate, there's little in the lyrics that feels more revealing than previous emotional fire-starters such as 2006's "Ring the Alarm". I Am…Sasha Fierce was ranked number two on Entertainment Weekly list of the 10 Best Albums of 2008. It also won a 2009 Soul Train Award for Album of the Year. The album and singles were nominated for 10 Grammy Awards including Album of the Year.

Track listing
