The Devil's Arithmetic is a novel written by Jane Yolen in 1988. It tells the story of a Jewish girl, Hannah, living in present time in the United States being transferred to Poland during the Nazi occupation in 1942 where she becomes Chaya. It received the National Jewish Book Award. It was made into a movie starring Kirsten Dunst as Hannah/Chaya in 1999.
