The <b>Estonia</b> was a car ferry bound from the Baltic port of ], ] to the Swedish city of ], on September 27, 1994. The ship was carrying 989 persons, including passengers and crew. The MS Estonia was a passenger ferry owned by Swedish-Estonian ship company Nordström & Thulin which sank on September 28 1994 on route from ], ] to ], ] carrying 989 people, including passengers and crew.


She was expectet to arrive in Stockholm at about 09:30 but a few minutes past 01:00, in the oskirts of ] archipelago the bow visor was torn of the ship by the pressure of the waves and water accumulated in the car deck. Soon the vessel lurched some 30 - 40 degrees to the right.
The weather conditions were not ideal. At approximately 1am on September 28th, somewhere to the southeast of ], the Estonia began taking on water. Enough water accumulated in the Car Deck of the ferry to destroy the stability of the vessel and capsize it. The last radar contact with the Estonia was at approximately 2:04 am.


May-day was communicated by the ship crew and rescue helicopters arrived on the site a couple of hours later.

The ] passenger ferry MS Mariella that was hurrying to the place of the accident had the last radar observation of Estonia at 02:04.
The location of the hulk is: 59° 23' N 21° 42' E, about 22 nautical miles on bearing 157° from Finland's Utö island.

A total of 94 passengers and 43 crew members were rescued from the life boats.
