Overview
The Devil's Arithmetic is a novel written by Jane Yolen in 1988. It tells the story of a Jewish girl, Hannah, living in present time in the United States who at her family's Passover Seder is transferred to Poland during the height of the Nazi occupation in 1942 where she becomes Chaya. It received the National Jewish Book Award. It was made into a TV movie starring Kirsten Dunst and Brittany Murphy in 1999.
