Doug Pruden of Canada has broken over 9 world records in push ups, and has 13 National records in push ups. Doug, who always wanted to be a world record holder, believes that setting high goals such as world records helps to also inspire and motivate young people he may talk to, to reach their dreams, stay healthy, and active. In his high school years Doug was more inclined to pursue general fitness than to be on team sports. Enjoying fitness, he pursued doing records in push ups. "Push ups can be done anyplace, at anytime almost, so there is little excuse to not do them and use it for fitness. Almost everyone knows how to do one, and you don't have to always be on a team to be fit" says Doug on why he does push ups.
History
Pruden has appeared in the Guinness World Records book, The Book of Alternative Records, and the Record Holders Republic.
Pruden holds many world records in push ups as an athlete. His many records include; one arm, one arm back of the hand, back of the (two) hands, and fist (knuckles). The most he has ever done in regular push ups is 10,000 in 8 hours. In 2005 he did an attempt of breaking long time British record holder Kevin Jefferson, whose 2003 U.K. record was 1582 back of hand push ups in one hour. Doug Pruden had a record of over 1800 in his first attempt, but the claim had errors in it and was rejected. He had to set a new date, do the whole hour of back of hand push ups all over again, and send in a new perfected error free claim. On July 8, 2005 he reapplied to record keeping agency Guinness World Records for the 1 hour record, and after many months of waiting, the record was accepted and Doug Pruden was the new world record holder. The final count: 1781. This time the attempt and claim was complete and acceptable. Doug later discovered that other record holders have had this happen to them for various reasons. "You have to stick to your goals and be focused" Doug says. Doug has done over 9.5 million push ups of various types in his lifetime so far and looks forward to adding a few more million on to that already huge push up total. As of 2007, Doug Pruden holds 10 current world records in push ups. "I want to inspire young athletes as much as I can and help to motivate young people to be the very best they can be". Doug will always have an absolute passion for using his push ups to reach out to young people in schools and adults in Edmonton's. Doug can sometimes be seen at the odd festival or on Whyte Avenue doing pushups for the interested locals and tourists. Doug has had autograph requests from as far away as USA, UK, and even India for their sports Hall of Fame travelling exhibition.
