Epirus Map

The map found on the Epirus (region) is clearly original research. This one: http://en.wikipedia.org/File:EpirusEduMap.jpg being created as synthesis of several cherry picked sources is clearly against policies. Just as well, one can cherry pick eight other academic sources from another point of view and then show it as fact. Azalea pomp (talk) 22:19, 11 November 2009 (UTC)

I posted a response on the Epirus region page. Azalea pomp (talk) 00:45, 12 November 2009 (UTC)
I posted some more responses on the Epirus region talk page. Azalea pomp (talk) 19:57, 13 November 2009 (UTC)
Some more comments again on the Epirus page. My main purpose for the Epirus page it so assure that we are accurately using the sources for the maps. I want them to be correct and thank you for your work on fixing the Mycenaean dot map. What is interesting is that the Greeks, Macedonians, Albanians, Illyrians, Dacians, Thracians, Phrygians, Paeonians, Bryges are all Indo-European anyway, but still I think that since we are dealing with very specific groups and many of which are little known, we just can't blanket terms like Thracian on tribes just because we may think they are related. We have to use the academic sources and what the scholars have. Whatever personal views or theories we have, we should not include those. Azalea pomp (talk) 21:51, 13 November 2009 (UTC)
Thanks the new map of Mycenaean sites looks nice. Azalea pomp (talk) 03:59, 15 November 2009 (UTC)

Join WikiProject NPOV

Hello! I invite you to join WikiProject NPOV, a WikiProject whose aim is to increase the neutral point of view of articles related to controversial issues and topics. It is chiefly designed to help users collaborate on articles, but also to resolve disputes, and to coordinate work on vandalism clean-up. All the best, --Cinéma C 22:05, 12 February 2010 (UTC)

Please pay attention

When are you going to stop already reverting everything I do. The map is wrong and the name is not applicable for the whole state and is not universally established. --Gligan (talk) 13:58, 13 February 2010 (UTC)

If I put "cn", there can always be found a citation for that (that is as if to write that Alexander of Macedon was an ethnic Macedonian and to tell you to put a citation needed note instead of reverting) which does not mean that the term is widely accepted. In fact, that is a 19th century invention in the style of what the Macedonians are doing now. Kaloyan was indeed sometimes called Emperor of Bulgarians and Vlachs and what? Was Bulgaria under Simeon Bulgaro-Roman Empire? That thing is completely inapplicable for the whole existence of the country and not universally accepted therefore it does not belong to the lead. It is already mentioned in a note. As for the map, that you brought back after you reverted me - 1) it is wrong 2)there are already plenty of maps in the article. You should not blindly revert my edits.
As for Kostja and Monshuai, I don't know what is their aim but after all the lead will be changed to what it is agreed in the discussion. I already advised Monshuai to put his ideas as a suggestion for the lead or to add them in one of the current suggestions. --Gligan (talk) 23:08, 13 February 2010 (UTC)

Maniots

Hi, with all due respect, i think you over-reacted here, if the ip was a banned user every edit is eligible to reversion of course. But it wasn't vandalism and to be frank i think it's a better choice. I don't believe "Turko-Albanian" has a very established usage in this or in any other historical context, in English sources that is. It's descriptive meaning is more perplexed also, while we might know that it refers mostly to Albanian Muslims faithful to the Gate, a reader could also understand "a mixed group of Albanians and Turks", "a group of mixed Turkish-Albanian origin" or at least "partly Turkified Albanians", all could be true, depending on occasion and perspective, but do our sources in this issue and the interpretation we give to them based on NPOV allow any of these assertions ? Just my two cents.--Δρακόλακκος (talk) 19:14, 27 February 2010 (UTC)

Ok, i see we have a different starting point here, i always thought that "Turko-albanians" refers to Albanian Muslims primarily, maybe i'm mislead from the topic i have mostly encountered it, Epirus, where indeed in all the texts i've read the terms coincide. The whole issue for me is not so important, that's why i opted for a discussion here and not in the article's talk page. Just some notes on the sources you picked, the first one confirms the definition i know, it mentions that Ljapidhes (which were a group of Albanian Muslims) where known in the local narrative as "Turko-Albanians". The second source mentions "Turkalbanians" as a literary translation of the Greek "Tourkalvanoi", this one includes Turks as well to its meaning but it still places its use inside a Greek perspective, and we don't see any further use of the term that would imply an endorsement. That said, i've taken a quick look at the search results you linked to, although some quite old publications are included, it seems at least one recent source treats "Turko-Albanian" (or "Turco-Albanian") as referring to Muslims in general, although the whole context is not available in googlebooks to be 100% sure. I guess if we are not sure about the ethnicity of Ottoman troops in this issue "Turko-Albanians" covers all possibilities, although "Turk-Albanians" seems more proper English.--Δρακόλακκος (talk) 04:48, 6 March 2010 (UTC)

There is sometihng very fishy going on with the revert war by the IPs in the 79.106 range on Greek Orthodox Church, Vasil Bollano, Erseka, Gjin Bua Shpata, Pyrros Dimas, Ghica family, Ali Pasha. I'm looking into it, probably a group of meatpuppets recruited off-wiki, who collaborate with one or two named users. It looks very coordinated. Definitely very suspicious, and they are clearly trying to set up some sort of revert trap. Athenean (talk) 22:53, 7 March 2010 (UTC)

Belthandros and Chrysantza

Hello Alexi! Very nice work on an interesting and neglected topic. I've added a few things, tweaked & copyedited a bit, but don't really know enough on the subject to add anything substantial, such as a thorough analysis. You've already covered the main spots, it seems to me. BTW, I hope you'll nominate this for a DYK. Again, well done.

PS, if you write or come across any other new Byzantine-related articles, please take the time to add them here and here. Thanks :) Constantine 15:36, 12 April 2010 (UTC)

Yes, certainly, it is a very good idea to add these extracts. Constantine 00:05, 13 April 2010 (UTC)
Thanks, but congrats go to you for beginning these articles. You are quite right, a navbox would be a good idea. Let me check the subject and I'll make one. There'll be plenty of redlinks to fill ;). BTW, if you want, send me an email with your mail address so that I can send you a few pdf books on Byzantine history. Best regards, Constantine 12:07, 16 April 2010 (UTC)

Placenames

Alexi, either Qamil Çami and Panos Bitsilis both have bicultural binational placenames, or they both have monolingual ones.

Either both "Çamëria" and "Epirus"... or neither.

You get to choose. Let me know. DS (talk) 20:15, 20 April 2010 (UTC)

It is better to mention both terms (N.Epirus and Chameria). I saw that User Zjarri adopts double standards by removing N. Epirus ] and adding Chameria ] the same time on specific articles. So, my proposal is this: keeping both terms. It would be interesting to hear his proposal.Alexikoua (talk) 20:36, 20 April 2010 (UTC)

Nope, I'm not adopting any double standards because I explained in the talkpage that I removed it by mistake and only when you re-added it I noticed that I had removed it.--— ZjarriRrethues —  20:47, 20 April 2010 (UTC)

Battle

I did not add any single battle that happened in there. But, the Paramythia and Filiates Massacres are important, i.e. they are the key points of the ethnic cleansing, and I can found too much info on them. I could add too many episodes on that, but I agree with you on the battle-minor issues; but those two are not minor. Whatsoever, please give me some concrete objections and points. Thanks, Balkanian`s word (talk) 07:05, 21 May 2010 (UTC)

I know what wpbattles means, but I cannot get why the Paramythia executions have more value than the Paramythia and Filiates Massacres. Of course, not every battle has an academic value, thats why I have not put there some 20 other cases from their expulsion, but those two massacres have an important historic value as Paramythia executions do too. As for Expulsion of Cham Albanians it is not NPOV. There is only one {{cn}} template on it. Which I will fill. Balkanian`s word (talk) 07:52, 21 May 2010 (UTC)

Thanasis Vagias

Thanks,it was nothing, just the truth. As for Vagias's article it's quite good. Also one notice;in some books, mainly older, there was a dispute about his birthplace cause according to some sources he was from Zagorochoria.I don't know if this dispute is now solved. Pavlos1988 (talk) 13:49, 19 June 2010 (UTC)

According to Σύγχρονος Εγκυκλοπαίδεια Ελευθερουδάκη,τόμος 4ος,σελ 796-97,there was a dispute about his birthplace but according to his kinsman, teacher Konstantinos Tsaousis Vagias he was born in Lekli, near Hormovo. His aunt suckled Ali's son Muhtar. His aunt took Thanasis in Ali's palace in order to protect him because Lekli was an often target for Ali's soldiers. In Giannena, his aunt was called Vagia and Thanasis,Thanasis of Vagia and then Thanasis Vagias.

After Ali's downfall he was ordered by Ali to kill Kyra Vasiliki Kontaxi but he didn't obey. After Ioannina's siege he was sended as a prisoner in Konstantinoupoli but he was released by the patriarch. In 1828 he followed kyra Vasiliki in Bursa and the following year came to Greece.

Kapodistrias send his son Ioannis in Pisa for studies.During 1834 he lived in Ioannina and after his death he was burried in his hometown Lekli.

His brother and Ali's doctor,Loukas Vagias Athanasios Psalidas son in law and during Messolongi siege he was one of Byron's doctors.Pavlos1988 (talk) 14:19, 19 June 2010 (UTC)

Fair use rationale for File:Chams1944.jpg

Thanks for uploading or contributing to File:Chams1944.jpg. I notice the file page specifies that the file is being used under fair use but there is not a suitable explanation or rationale as to why each specific use in Misplaced Pages constitutes fair use. Please go to the file description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale.

If you have uploaded other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified the fair use rationale on those pages too. You can find a list of 'file' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Misplaced Pages page when you are logged in), and then selecting "File" from the dropdown box. Note that any non-free media lacking such an explanation will be deleted one week after they have been tagged, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. Sfan00 IMG (talk) 13:47, 20 June 2010 (UTC)

Hi Alexikoua. I want your opinion for my new article. Thanks. Nataly8 (talk) 15:08, 22 June 2010 (UTC)

Many thanks

Your article on Aristeidis Moraitinis has turned out very nicely. Thank you for your contribution to World War I aviation history. It is the little additions such as yours that have made the Misplaced Pages listing of World War I aces the most complete and accurate list in existence (IMHO).

Albania map

Hi there. I saw your nice map of albania. I have a suggestion on how to improve it. There are the Gorani people. They have some settlements in southern kosovo, and some settlements in Albania itself. Perhaps it might not be bad to add them to the map? You can see a bit into albania here, And this map here, might be the best one to help. Let me know what you think. :) (LAz17 (talk) 03:24, 16 July 2010 (UTC)). There might be some stuff here too, (LAz17 (talk) 03:33, 16 July 2010 (UTC)).

Vasilika

You are correct about this village. It was completely Greek even according to Bulgarian sources. I must have confused it with another village, because I wouldn't have added the Bulgarian name if I had known. Thanks for correcting it. Kostja (talk) 06:56, 23 July 2010 (UTC)

Geografico de Agostini

I couldn't find this source in Google books, so could you tell me what it's about? It should be noted that WP:NC mandates inclusion of an alternate name only if it has (or had) a population of those people. I don't think that having a Greek school means that there were Greeks there. For example, while Starchevo was patriarchist, it was Bulgarian (or Slavic, if you prefer) speaking even according to this rather nationalist Greek source: . So it seems doubtful that the Greek name was actually used (especially as it's simply a transliteration of the Bulgarian name).
About Bogoroditsa, it's listed as exarchist in "La Macédoine et sa Population Chrétienne", written by the former secretary of the Bulgarian Exarchate: page 97, left hand side. While the neutrality of the book is of course suspect, he does seem to list patriarchist villages, like Starchevo (on the same page). And as the name is also simply a transliteration of the Bulgarian one (wouldn't people attending a Greek church call it Παναγία?), it does seem rather doubtful that this name was used.
I'm not calling these names original research but I'm interested in seeing a quote from your source. It's only fair since I've provided you with my main source. Kostja (talk) 07:06, 24 July 2010 (UTC)

Wrong, Kostja. We only include alternate foreign names in the first line of the lead if they are used by a significant number of reliable English language sources, in order to help our readers. Know why? So if the average English reader has heard of the place by an alternate name, he will know he will have arrived at the right article. We do not need to include foreign names in the first line of the lead solely for the sake of a former population (or even a current one, unless many English language sources use that name). In such cases, a mention elsewhere in the lead, in a name section, or even in the history section of an article is sufficient. To include an alternate name in the first line of the lead, you must show that a significant number of reliable, English language sources use that name. Nothing more, nothing less. Athenean (talk) 07:25, 24 July 2010 (UTC)
WP:NCGN: Relevant foreign language names (one used by at least 10% of sources in the English language or is used by a group of people which used to inhabit this geographical place) are permitted and should be listed in alphabetic order of their respective languages, i.e., (Armenian name1, Belarusian name2, Czech name3). or (ar: name1, be: name2, cs: name3). As an exception to alphabetical order, the local official name should be listed before other alternate names if it differs from a widely accepted English name. Kostja (talk) 07:33, 24 July 2010 (UTC)
Classic WP:LAWYER, quoting the letter of the policy so as to defeat its spirit. Read this . Btw, many names you added on your recent POV-spree are already in the name section (e.g. Axioupoli).Athenean (talk) 07:43, 24 July 2010 (UTC)
So before editing an article in addition to reading the Misplaced Pages policy I must also inform myself of what every random admin thinks? And according to you following the spirit of a rule means deliberately ignoring part of the rule? This is beyond ridiculous and I would advise you to actually read a section before citing it.
And choose your accusations more carefully. It was agreed quite a long time ago that names used in a foreign language had a place in articles if they were once used. You yourself have added many Greek names to Bulgarian articles (something with which I agreed). But if we were to follow your position, no Greek names should be used in any of those articles, as names written in the Greek alphabet are obviously not used in English. So try to be a little less hypocritical.
Most of articles I edited didn't have a name section. If some do, I'll remove them at once, of course. Kostja (talk) 07:55, 24 July 2010 (UTC)
no Greek names should be used in any of those articles, as names written in the Greek alphabet are obviously not used in English. How utterly inane. Does Philippopolis ring a bell? Is there no word for "transliteration" in Bulgarian? And yes, what you are doing is pure WP:LAWYER. Almost all of the names you have added are of absolutely no interest to the average English reader. Especially those for municipalities that didn't even exist at the time. Athenean (talk) 08:06, 24 July 2010 (UTC)
You and Alexikoua are adding names written in the Greek Alphabet, so my point is valid. And since when has Future Perfect at Sunrise been given the right to set Misplaced Pages policy, so that we have to follow his guidelines? You still haven't explained why the provision of adding names used by people who once lived there must be ignored.
And again, choose your accusations more carefully. I've added the Bulgarian names only to those municipalities who are named after their municipality seat (and when the seat hasn't its own article). Kostja (talk) 08:17, 24 July 2010 (UTC)
Thanks for adding the map! It's quite interesting but it's not very clear due to its size. Not to mention that the original caption has been replaced which puts doubt on its accuracy and neutrality (though I agree that the writing of the former secretary of the Bulgarian Exarchate are probably even less neutral).
In any case, with few sources available, it's very useful for this period of history. However, it should be used carefully. For example, while the map indicates that there was a Greeck church in Bogoroditsa, an actual search for Βογορόβιτσα yields just one result, so it seems unlikely that it was actually used. So I'll remove it as original research.
Still, as you can see, I don't share Athenean's view of the guidelines, so I'm not against the addition of foreign names to Bulgarian place name articles, as long as they're sourced. Kostja (talk) 21:04, 25 July 2010 (UTC)
I'm not against the inclusion of foreign names, I disagree with where you place them, and your rationale for doing so. Athenean (talk) 21:18, 25 July 2010 (UTC)
@Kosjta: As I see the original caption hasn't been replaced: in the specific spot (upper right) there was no initial caption at all and it was added by the authors of the book I've scanned from (it's Ekdotike Athenon, as I know it's ok). Suppose this map was accompanied with detailed lists of schools/pupils etc. for every village.Alexikoua (talk) 10:35, 26 July 2010 (UTC)
Well, most of the symbols are self-explanatory. Though I do have doubts that every church in the region was Greek.
Still, even if a bit doubtful on its own, the map is good enough, if combined with other sources, to give some rough information on the demographics of the region of the time.
@Athenean: Unfortunately, apart from the personal opinion of one admin, you haven't given any good reasons why your rationale should be followed. Kostja (talk) 12:39, 26 July 2010 (UTC)
I'll also upload a similar map of Monastir (Bitola) Vilayet.Alexikoua (talk) 12:56, 26 July 2010 (UTC)

About Sulmues, I admit he isn't the most civil editor in wikipedia (he really tries at times to be more neutral, however dealing incivility with incivility isn't a sound approach), everyone has a pov background anyway, more or less. Since you are interested in historical topics, I would suggest, in order to be let's say more 'respected' (although that doesn't guarantee that) you calm down and create an account. Since you are interested in the Despotate of Epirus I need some help to fix/add about culture/education.Alexikoua (talk) 17:21, 27 July 2010 (UTC)

HI I try to keep a neutral perspective of things but I really think you should remember that wikipedia is just an encyclopedia and politics should be left out of the way people conduct themselves. It really is sad to see Greek vs Albanian conflict on here and nationalism inflaming editors. Dr. Blofeld 13:22, 29 July 2010 (UTC)

Autonomous Republic of Northern Epirus

Hi ! I am trying to translate and adapt your article for the French Misplaced Pages (you can see there : fr:Utilisateur:Konstantinos/Brouillon1) and I am presently verifying the links and the references of the article. Now, I can't find the information for this part:

  • "From the Orthodox population an estimated 30,000 to 47,000 spoke Greek exclusively. The rest of the Orthodox community were bilinguals, speaking an Albanian patois at home and being literate in Greek only, which they also used in their cultural, trading and economic activities. Moreover, they expressed a strong pro-Greek feeling and were the first that supported the following breakaway autonomist movement." My problem is that I can only read page 262 but it seems to me that Newman only give the number of 45.000 for the Greeks and doesn't say anything about the "pro-Greek feeling" of Christian Albanians. Can you tell me if there is a problem of reference? Thank you very much. Konstantinos PS1- I will probably contact you for other little problems. PS2- Congratulation for your article. Thanks to you, I've learned a lot !

Hi! Thanks for your help! I found another little problems:

  • The reference number 25 says: <:ref name="Ruches 89-89">Kondis 1976: 127</ref>. Now, Ruches is not the same author than Kondis. Can you verify if the reference must link to Ruches' or Kondis' book?
  • I can't find the page of the reference number 38. Can you verify in the article?
  • There is the same problem for the notes 42, 47 and 50. Do you think you can verify?

Have a good day, Konstantinos.

Once more, thanks a lot for your help... Another French contributor sent me Guy Nicola's article so I'll add the missing page as soon as I'll find it. When my translation will be complete, I'll present it to to the "featured article" label. Evidently, I'll credit you and your work when I'll do it. Botsaris

Alexikoua the surname is not a "Souliote" surname, because there is not a specific surname used just by Souliots. Are you suggesting that Boçari of Tragjas are Souliots? hello

hi there.First of all, I can say that it's a very interesting link

About botsaris flag maybe there were some versions(the flag from the link is similar) But there is definetely a non-clear status of some flags---for example, take a look at spetses flag(p.47)(with red and white) In fact, the flag that is in use from spetses municipality officialy is this: File:Spetses.jpg (blue-red) you can see it also in Spetses article at the picture of bouboulina's statue

I found very interesting a flag from Gazis used in Thessaly from the link cu Greco22 (talk) 18:06, 14 August 2010 (UTC)

WPGR & museums

WPGR isn't related to museums and there aren't any wpgr tags in any museum (like the Pergamon Museum).--— ZjarriRrethues —  07:04, 17 August 2010 (UTC)

Alexi, actually I have to agree with Zjarri on this: you should gently remove that banner: The Arms of Skanderbeg are in the Kunsthistorisches Museum: not for this that museum is under WPSQ. However we should either be very flexible and allow each WP place the tag where we feel it's necessary, or have an agreement. After Athenean brought me to AE and one of the accusations was that I was entering Thesprotians, Pyrrhus, Chaonaians, and Molossians under WP Albania I think we should either be careful and come to a meeting point, or allow one another to place WP banner freely in interrelated articles. I also opened a thread in WP Greece on this Wikipedia_talk:WikiProject_Greece/Archive_3#WPSQ_and_WPGR_tags, and I was told by Athenean to leave it as it is. Leaving though things as they are is not a good idea in Misplaced Pages. Consensus and communications are needed, rather than reporting and fighting. Recently I am starting to think that we should just allow one another WP just place freely the banners, but you have to allow us do the same thing. --Sulmues 14:18, 17 August 2010 (UTC)

Moustakidis? I was hoping on your input on him. It seems like a Greek author. Zjarri might help. --Sulmues 19:40, 23 August 2010 (UTC)

Modern Greek history proposal

Hello Alexi! I have tabled a proposal on a restructuring of coverage of modern Greek history in Misplaced Pages, and am awaiting input. Best regards, Constantine 17:30, 26 August 2010 (UTC)

Moscopole

The Ottomans are not Albanian bands mr.Alexikoua. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Bnik (talkcontribs) 22:36, 28 August 2010 (UTC)

As an overwhelming majority of sources points is that the destructions of Moscopole took place due to raids by local Muslim armed groups that were attracted by the wealth of the city (Ali Pasha etc.).Alexikoua (talk) 07:57, 29 August 2010 (UTC)

No problem!I

I believe reason and good faith can reach many objectives. You are very knowledgable in the Epirus area and very fond of it. I don't think any Albanian wiki had any clue about Pandeli Kotoko before you brought him around. And we've had excellent help from Constantine, who in my opinion would do a good thing to become an admin so that the ARBMAC can start being led by the Balkanic people themselves. There have been many histories of war in the region, but this is not a reason not to present both Greek side and Albanian side in a decent and respectful way. Zjarri and Aigest will help too. We've been around for a while and should NOT repeat the epic wars of the Brits with the Irish, rather we should learn from their experience and not repeat their mistakes. --Sulmues 12:22, 29 August 2010 (UTC)

Barnstar

Thanks! Actually, you should thank our friends the Russians, they provide the stuff ;) Constantine 16:55, 31 August 2010 (UTC)

Translation

No problem, just don't template me please, it's really annoying. Tadija used to do it a lot, although he was never mentioned. Can you please help a little with the references on Gjirokastër#Education? Put some cite web and names of Greek authors there. Gjirokaster in my opinion should go to GA as soon as we put some stuff on the Economy. It's a B article for now. --Sulmues 20:50, 31 August 2010 (UTC)

Talkpage

You should use templates carefully and not use them on regular users' talkpages per wp:dttr.--— ZjarriRrethues —  14:53, 8 September 2010 (UTC)

The tag is appropriate: you should avoid misinformation in your edit-summaries, like pretending that someone 'edit-warred' for example ], as an excuse to support ip disruption.Alexikoua (talk) 15:07, 8 September 2010 (UTC)
You reverted the IP and I didn't support the IP because I didn't revert to the ethnic Albanian version but removed all ethnicities since you were reverting them.--— ZjarriRrethues —  15:48, 8 September 2010 (UTC)
