The Narryer Gneiss Terrane complex is verifiably the oldest known portion of the crust on Earth. Samples of zircon from the Jack Hills portion of the Narryer Gneiss have been radiometrically dated at 4.4 Ga, although the majority of zircon crystals are about 3.9 Ga.

The gneiss itself is generally a leucocratic metamorphic rock of amphibolite grade, with severe polyphase deformation which makes interpretation of its protolith essentially impossible.
